Interesting update! I'm kinda bummed you didn't record your pre install #s via dyno as suggested earlier. Any plans to hit the dyno for post install #s?

I'm glad you like it, but quick question...

Where did you get these HP numbers at? Dinan shows only 8hp increase with Stage 1, stage 3 is so that the tune can correctly use the amount of air, and 8hp more for the throttle body (all from their website). 28hp for the throttle body and tune is really over exaggerated. Maybe in a Honda where their "from factory" parts are not performance based whatsoever.

I'll let someone chime in with real numbers, but I am thinking closer to 10-15hp real world. But the weight loss from both the resonator removal and exhaust and the corrected power curve may be the bigger factor.

Again, I am glad you like the finished product!

I did look for a Dyno shop just for the X5 you need a AWD dyno - and there was not one nearby.. I would have to go out of way drive and pay for the testing.. I will get it done soon tho as i want to see the results myself.. I am loving everything about the DINAN tune except the quiet exhaust sound at idle now. where before it sounded like a scary muscle car now has been quieted down to a whisper..

Well there's more then just the dinan stuff.. I also have the AFE cold air intake (stage 2) where it claims additional 10-HP. {This Stage 2 cold air intake system produces 10 max horsepower, 20lbs. x ft. torque and out-flowed the factory intake by 87%}

so you have the AFE cold air intake - lets just say 8HP instead of 10HP, then you got the resinator removed and SUPERSPRINT freeflow exhaust added with additional claims of 10-15 HP. So the AFE intake and the exahust alone should add 15 HP by itself. Then I have the DINAN High flow throttle body added with claims of 8-10 HP more, lets stay at 8HP, so the HIGH FLOW body adds another 8HP to the 15 HP - so were at what 20HP - with the DINAN stage 3 software which takes advantage of the air flow and all - even if it adds an extra 15 HP - all together were 35HP+ - add that to 355 stock - were close to 400 HP mark..

Once i do the 4WD DYNO we will know for suree :-)

I don't think you can consider all those claimed increases to be cumulative. You would need each of them to get the benefit from the others. A dyno would show it for sure. Also, the hp increases you are noting are at the hp peak, up near redline. Is that the engine speed you are using for taking off from a standing stop?

Interesting observation on the increased engine braking. Engine braking is a function of restriction in the induction system. Did you change the transmission software so that it shifts differently? If not, then your observation of increased power due to reduced intake restriction is at odds with what you are noting on perceived engine braking.

Unfortunately, I think you'll be in for some disappointment when you strap it down unless BMW has really bad mapping on those cars from the factory.

You cannot simply "add" up manufacturer's claims to come up with a peak power increase.

On top of manufacturers using numbers that are always enthusiastically high, gains from one modification to the other are rarely at the same point under the curve. One may gain the most increase at 3200 rpm, while another may add a small amount at 5800.

The end point is that you are happy with the changes and the way that the car drives, regardless of real number imrovements or perceptive differences. Dyno numbers at this point won't give you any real data to gauge gains.

You can't compare the BMW released figures to any dyno results you get. You really need to dyno it stock and then modified on the same dyno to make any claims.

I'd love to hear numbers once its dynoed.

I'm also in Ridgewood often so if you wanna meet up one weekend and see how it does against a bone stock 4.8iS (well xpipe and AFE stage 2 which i'm almost positive gives minimal gains besides sound) I'd be game.

Not even trying to be competitive I'm just really curious how much quicker it will be than mine.

I would not expect the gains to be the total of the individual claims either, though my experience with Dinan is they are conservative about gains. My experience with BMW is that the ratings are close enough to fall within dyno to dyno and conditions variations.

Over simplified, torque gets you going and horsepower keeps you going. Since the X5 weighs so much, for street driving, where there is a lot of acceleration from a standing start, TQ increases are the key numbers. There will also be HP gains but they are not as beneficial on the street as torque will be.

If I use only Dinan Mod figures they posted for the 4.6 the stock horsepower was 340 with TQ at 364. With the Dinan mods of their exhaust, throttle body, engine, software, air box, High flow MAF the HP was rated at 369 and TQ at 382. TQ and HP peaks were calculated at the same RPMs as stock peaks. TQ gains would be noticed at about 3500 RPMs. HP benefits wouldn't be much help until about 4,500 RPMs. As you would expect the TQ and HP gains continue to improve as RPM reaches 6,500 redline. What all that boils down to is that a stock 4.6 should stay with 4.6 with Dinan mods until about 3,500 RPMs. From there on through the gears the Dinan modded 4.6 should slowly walk away. This would somewhat similar to two 4.8s though without the engine software matched to the other mods the difference would most likely be less.

Brother Im game.. 100% lets do it.. just.. give me 2 weeks.. I just ordered HAMANN headers today & race cats... lets do the test after they are in... :-) I work in ridgewood so its perfect
