Suitable hub-puller - axle replacement?

Hi all,

Planning on replacing one of my front axles as the CV joint is rattling a lot when I turn left. I'm aware that I'll need some sort of hub-puller. Will one of the following be suitable:

I like the look of the gear puller as it seems like it would be more useful for other things in future - it's also half the price, but whatever I get needs to be suitable for the task in hand now.

Any opinions?

Not sure if it'll work for you as I may have gotten lucky, but I didn't use any puller to remove my front axles when I replaced them.

The inner splines just pop out from the diff with only minor effort with a small pry-bar, and the outer splines in the hubs only required a few smacks with a 5 pound soft mallet and brass drift. I would imagine you'd only need a puller if your splines are rusty, damaged, or neglected. If that's the case, a standard large 3-jaw puller will usually pop them loose well enough to finish driving them out with a mallet. Good luck.

JBF, I recommend using the pullers that "press in the axle" using the threaded rod and the flange that goes over the hub and secures with wheel bolts.

However, the "deep flange" you pictured won't fit over our hubs, I know because the kit I rented had both flanges in it. The "deep flange" is just a hair narrow to line up all 3 bolts.

The claw type hub puller did not work for me, as there was nothing really for the claw to grab onto. The bolt one is the way to go.

Ive done a few of these recently, the hub puller isnt really necessary, unless you have a really badly seized CV axle. usually i use a pointed center punch and a 2 lb hammer, tap it out, use some penetrating oil (WD40 or so) once its loose, then take a prybar and pop it loose from the front diff.
I made a tool up from an old axle nut (ground off the nut part and use it "upside down" to "pull" the axle through, sometimes its really tight, DONT hammer on the rubber CV boot, DO not !! figure out a way to pull it through.
