I get over 400 miles a tank, without putting a wheel on the hwy.

Ahhh, the good ole days of my 3.0. I was spending more on gas then, though. I filled up at least once a week bc I didn't work from home.

Hey its all good I'm sure the extra 130 bhp is worth it
On the opposite end of the coin I'm impressed that an almost 3 ton truck, with a 225hp inline six and a 5MT with 20" staggered wheels/tires can pull an average of 18 mpg with mixed driving, in my case. If I'm all highway I'm just about at 21mpg which is staggering

It is a rare occasion I let the fuel light come on but di so week ago after a long highway round trip. Averaged 75-80mph with maybe 20 miles around town non highway. Summer 20" shoes on. It is a rare day we break 400 miles per tank so it was a Kodak moment.
![]() But from above clearly I had more to go in the tank vs prior poster. ![]() Those were both sitting level. Here is one on a slight hill, nose down. ![]() Long term tracking is on the fuelly site. Sometimes the summary screen is a little painful to see: ![]() And you can see the jump in miles when the winter gas ends ![]() Interesting fuel stats here: no idea how accurate but they have a decent sample set http://www.fuelly.com/car/bmw/x5 Junkycosmos 2005 4.8is

Years ago I did that, no more.
I never let fuel go below 1/4 for a few reasons: - What is I am stuck in traffic for hours? - Siphon Pump issue - Main Fuel Pump issue Running fuel below E is like playing Russian Roulette...

Best hwy range I've ever seen is over 575 miles. I remove the staggered wheels (I have a "for towing/hwy set of 255-19s B'stones, 38 psi), no speeds over 75mph, no AC, windows/sunroof closed. 1100 mile trips between houses in Coppell, TX & Spring Hill, FL with one gas stop. I pull into the FL house garage with 60 miles to "E" showing on OBC.
The sweet spot for MPG with the 4.4 M62 seems to be under 75mph, do 80mph and expect to loose 100 miles in range.

If you've ever had to change a fuel pump I don't think you'd drive your car past or even to E. Why risk burning up your pump?
When your range shows 40 in a BMW, you better start looking for a gas station. The estimate is just that and can bounce all over the place. |

I manually calculated it based on miles on my trip meter and gallons filled yesterday and I was actually at 20.2 mpg on my tank on my 5MT 3.0. Thanks for the recommendation! Wife just got a clean diesel VW TDI as well so I'll be using it in her vehicle as a lubricant is recommended by many of the TDIClub enthusiasts on their forum, for long and healthy engine life
