Here's more info about the Takata airbag recall that was posted on the e39 BimFest forum. It appears the e53 X5s that are affected have the optional sport steering wheel airbag. Looks like my MT is getting a new air bag. Hopefully it does not take years to get this done. My xi got the letter in September. BMW of Murray put me on a list to get it done and it still is not done due to lack of parts.

Too bad they won't replace the entire steering wheel. Mine is a bit worn due to some knob po driving at the 12 o clock position all the time.

So I did a search for my X5 and this came up: Number of Open Recalls: 0. Does that mean my X is not part of the air bag recall or I should check again after some time?

When I have changed my steering wheel against a used one as I did, how do I find out that my airbag is not part of the replacement?

Check again after some time. This whole thing has been unraveling for awhile.

My '03 4.4 sport pkg has the same wheel as the E46 sport pkg, guess I'm in the recall.

I guess anyone who swapped a recalled bag sport wheel into their non-sport will need to pay "out of pocket" for the new bag, manufacturer is not "on the hook" for replacing recalled parts owner has installed.

What if you changed the wheel but used the original bag?

I have the e39 M5 wheel with my original bag, guess the simple solution is to put my wheel back if I get the recall.

Also, mine is a sport too.

You have a sport pkg E53 and will be on the recall list.

Good idea to swap the OE wheel back before you bring it in. Dealers might be instructed to "push back" with modified equipment vehicles, due to limited availability of replacement bags.
