Hey guys, I'm the guy that did all of the work on this truck . He had error before doing the vanos seals. Upon removing vanos, bothintake and exhaust pistons were very sloppy and in fact just fell out of Vanos unit. After I replaced the seals, truck still had rough start and code. I scanned it with GT1/ IPNA and it said something like exhaust camshaft reached limit. Exhaust actuator "B" after going through test schedukle in GT1 , it recommended new vanos unit. WE tried swapping out Exhaust solenoid (checked spring inside vanos, ect) ,we tried changing camshaft position sensor, still had code . Yesterday, I took the vanos apart again and swapped his intake and exhaust pistons to another vanos unit I had. I used 2 cans of brake cleaner and blew out every oil passage in vanos unit. After I put everything back together, the truck fired up and sounds great. He picked the truck up this morning and the code hasn't come back . (fingers crossed that did the trick )

This guy "Hollywood516(James)" Does amazing work, Drove 30 miles after i picked it up and it feels like a new car, my car hasn't run this smooth in months, I'm more than happy the code is gone.
Sucks that it was such a headache to get rid of but all is well, Now i can start the sound system project :p. Thanks again James, if you have any engine or suspension work in the NYC area he's the guy to call, he has an answer for almost everything and he won't kill you with price. |

The pistons were sloppy from the bad seals.. When i replaced the seals, everything seemed good. I think there was a problem with the rod and spring at exhaust solenoid. I dont think his truck even has 90k miles on it . The Vanos unit I used had intake and exhaust solenoids and CPS still on it.... just sucked because i had to basically do vanos twice...

Could of been a bad seal install the first time. The seals are supposed to be installed in a particular fashion and then "broken in" for the first couple hundered miles.
Glad you got it worked out! |

I have done about 25-30 vanos rebuilds/seals since i started working on BMW's . They are fairly simple devices that do a complicated job. Im happy it worked out also because we were running out of options and BMW was goin to charge him $1400-$1700 for a new vanos

The "Sloppy Piston" could have worn the bore enough that even with new seals, it was not enough to prevent the new seal from sealing correctly.
