PS window stuck down, EEPROM-KI
On Friday last week I got some kind of bogus EEPROM-KI message on dashboard. At first I didnt know what it was but as I started driving a realized none of the gauges were working except for the speedometer! Its the first time Ive ever seen this in the last 5 years that I have had the vehicle and I havent run into the same issue since Friday. Not sure if its a problem or not ![]() But now I have a potentially larger problem... my front passenger side window is stuck in the 100% down position and cant get it to come back up. I remember hearing some kind of clunking sound the last time I rolled it all the way back up which was earlier this morning. Whats really odd is when I push the button to roll it back up, I can hear it attempt too, and also the engine starts to sound funky and the lights dim ![]() Im assuming the window regulator went bad? The car is calling for an inspection (service interval ii)and my bmw mechanic (non dealer) quoted me $1,273.06 + tax and includes oil and filter change, fuel filter, air filter, pollen filter, spark plugs, and differential fluid change... which seams like a lot to me... but im wondering if I should just let them do the window regulator too if its a pain in the ass... although I might have to at this point if I cant get the window up by morning. ![]() EDIT: Oh yea - they also suggested I do the Cooling Overhaul as well... FML $$$$ Its a 2006 and has 89K miles on it. Last edited by rdeyoung; 10-07-2015 at 12:49 AM. |

Not sure of your mechanical abilities, but the work you said they are doing is well within the scope of a basic DIY'er. Your looking at maybe $400 in parts and a couple hours of labor. As far as the window, look on youtube for video. A pretty simple procedure. Get a good quality regulator, especially since it is driver door that gets used all the time. Pelican has all the parts you need. I have nothing on the EPROM msg.

And the window problem could be just the classic "black plastic clip" broke. $2 fix. Have to open it up to see if its the regulator or just the cheap-$!% clip.
Just helped my neighbor replace spark plugs and coils on his E60. Dealer quoted 4.5 hours labor plus parts (at 20% over list) - $1400! OEM parts were $300 and we did it in ~30 minutes, plus some beer drinking time... You have to decide what you are comfortable doing and your take on the DIY/Pay balance.

Window regulator is not a big deal as it seems and like was said - it could be just a plastic pieces. I just did mine last week - it is less then an hour job (plastic holders) may be a little longer for whole regulator because there are more screws, you'd have to remove more of that soundproofing material and removing/inserting a window regulator itself seems like top-notch acrobatic exercise but there plenty of guidance clips on YouTube.
-oil and filter change - this is done with every oil change so if your car is due for that - go for it. -fuel filter kinda pain to do, It was a disappointment for me to see where BMW engineers shoveled that filter to, it is DIY doable but seeing it's done by mechanic first will helps with next time (it is almost $100 part, so you know) -air filter - few min procedure -pollen filter 10 min procedure (if you have a vacuum cleaner to clean the surrounding area, that would be awesome) -spark plugs - 50/50, I took it to mechanic, I guess I just did not feel like grabbing the wrench it on that particular day (having magnetic socket and torque wrench is recommended) -differential fluid change (and Transfer case) as well, easy if you can get the car high enough AND SECURE to be under it - relatively easy, all 3 can be changed in about 1.5 hrs, simple pump that inserts in to the oil bottle and tools to open fill/drain caps is all you need ... Should you decide to go with mechanic, please make sure that they use proper oils. I went with OEM BMW in differentials and Liquid Molly Synthetic for transfer case, I can text you a pictures of bottles if you PM me your cell.

Hey guys thanks for the replies!
I am inclined to do some of the work myself but there are certain things I cannot do like the fuel filter and differential fluid change. I live in an apartment and cant exactly raise my car to get at this stuff. The air filters I already did last year and I could do the spark plugs - im just afraid of not putting them in straight or overtightening them. For the spark plug service do I just replace the plugs or do they replace the boots as well? As for the window I seriously hope its just the clips - im going to take the door panel off tonight and check it out. When I try to roll it up I can hear the clicking/clunk but nothing happens. |

Sounds like the clips if you hear the regulator clunking around

So - its definitely not the clips - or at least im 90% sure. Since the window is completed retracted into the door, the clips are really hard to see. But from what I saw they looked perfect. I couldn't even lift the window up by hand to see better. At that point I couldn't do anything else so Im leaving it to the mechanic to fix it
Oil change, fuel filter, differential fluid drain, spark plugs, and that stupid window for $1705. |

^Ouch. It really does pay to be a DIY'er owning these vehicles.
Best of luck with the indy. At least you won't have to worry about it again and you will have a warranty on the work/parts. That's a bonus of using a shop.
