4.4 to a 4.6is motor, oh what a thing.

4.6 is the same engine like M62TU with a slightly bigger displacement and hotter cams. Everything from M62B44 must be bolt on. Probably the easiest way would be to find a M62TU from E39 and transfer all parts that are required.
B46 in E39 would be as close to M5 as as it gets. I really miss my '03 4.6is

Are you really gaining much though over the 4.4 m62 for the cost?

4.6-liter V-8 was engineered with some inspiration from Alpina, BMW's factory-anointed aftermarket tuner in Buchloe, Germany.

Like Alpina's own 4.6-liter B10, the factory's DOHC 32-valve variant is a riff on the current M62 V-8 found in the X5 4.4i and 540i. The crucial difference is that each pot now displaces 577cc instead of 550cc, due to 1.0mm more of bore and 2.3mm more of stroke. A compression-ratio increase of 0.3 to 10.5:1, a looser exhaust, huge m60 intake manifold, and lumpier intake cams backed up by a more aggressive mapping of the engine's cam-phasing mechanism account for a rating of 340 horsepower, 50 more than in the 2002-03 4.4i, which went to 290 from 282 horsepower in the facelift.

The crankshaft also turns another 26 pound-feet, for 350 total (iI'm currently @ 324 peak) That coupled with my 5-speed automatic ZF 5 HP 24 EH to a 3:15 diff should launch me pretty nicely.
I have the 540it ready to refresh and add a s/c so that might net 400-420hp @ the crank.

This motor if accurately described is almost like new, fully refreshed for $4000. I have a shop to do the work minus the coding.
The 4.6is has a true 50hp more than the 4.4 from key turn to 6,700rpm and is built as well if not better slightly than the 4.4.
So, spending $4k to refresh the 4.4 and another $6-7k on the s/c with potential tuning issues verses $6-7k on the 4.6is swap and selling my perfectly running 4.4 for $1-2k to offset the cost seems to make sense to me at this point.

Getting to say I have a 4.6is wagon, priceless to me and potentially adding a s/c @ a later date to hit 450-500hp down the road makes me emotionally erect a little bit.

My car runs fine and If the mounting brackets can be fiddled with to work with the room I have in my engine bay, all the accessories should just slip right onto the 4.6.

I'll add headers and look for decent performance cats to lay a foundation for the s/c down the line.
Refresh the suspension and have a very torqe-rich wagon giving the lsd a good workout.

I'm about ready to pull the trigger. I just need a month where I don't need my car, winter can't come soon enough!

Wagon is even cooler. I was actually ready to swap my 4.6is engine with my '02 540i wagon before i sold it. But I was hoping the X5 will be bought from enthusiast and I couldnt let myself ruin the great car. Eventually it was bought from people who didnt even knew it is V8, and traded in for Toyota Corola less than a year later. Guess if i am kicking myself in the ass everytime I think about it.

There existed a thread from about 6 years when someone did this to their 540i6. They even wrote about the drive- which was nice- and the errors they encountered.

Edit. Anxious to post and go to bed. I did find the referenced build:

All of the work, while not yet compete, was in the case of my memory- totally worth it.

Very cool. Thank you for finding that! Although, that guy, "UncleKen" only used the 4.6 block/pistons. He used his original 4.4 heads and cams. He claims it was super torque rich but never got on a dyno. He hasn't posted since 2011. However there's some great info in that thread.

As I was browsing through to learn about the differences between the 4.6is parts, I found the following parts that are shared with the older engines and some are specific only to x5 4.6is and the e52 alpina

Some have replaced the 4.4 m62tu blocks with the 4.6 from the 01-03 x5 to get the larger displacement, so this is why I did some looking. The even later 4.8 block is too much different, so not even worth looking.

The 4.6 is rated at about 350hp vs 300 for the 4.4

50hp is substantial for sure. This will be a sweet build if you decide to pull the trigger.

Didn't realize it was so expensive to FI the m62tub44... thought for sure that could be done for $4000 or less.

Would be awesome if you could find an m62b48. But those only came in the Alpina B10 and the Alpina roadster. 370hp/376tq

Sucks. Fingers crossed for you. Would love to see this happen. Read that whole thread posted earlier and it seemed like a really cool car. Guy is only a couple of hours from me too in Houston.
