No, it is crazy. Honestly, to the right buyer, a refreshed m62 respectively is $7-8k for a range rover and $3-4k for a bimmer. Same exact motor but for the oil pan and pump!
I just found my extra income for this coming year.

Like I said, get what you can. If you can find a buyer then more power to you.

Sold for $1,300. I think the recent dyno run helped. No accessories, no v/c's. He's putting it in a range rover.

That's why I didn't post it for sale here. Lol! I'm looking for a casual, local buyer in need.

Trust me. This is going so much slower than expected. Be patient. I personally am jumping out of my skin but there's been a few set backs. Beyond that I thought I'd start the new year off with a teaser at least. We'll be breaking it down over the next few days. To go on the engine lift, need bolts:
2 M10x1.5 x 75mm long (3") 2 M10x1.5 x 85-90mm long (3.5") 4 M10 flat washers 2 M10x1.5 nuts. In case you plan to do this one day. I'll take my M12 bolts back. never anticipate. Yet 1 more rule from the military coming into play.

^Nice. Is there a retrofit to change from the water cooled alternator (stupid idea) to the air cooled units?

I honestly don't know. I'd like the water cooled unit if I can keep it. From what I've read, they're pretty reliable. (saying that after replacing the one in my wife's X a few months ago) It lasted since '03 so that's not bad.

We did this on a customers car at the shop I work at albeit on an N62 a couple months ago. His car had a water cooled and the donor car's engine was air cooled. Ended up having to change the alternator housing bracket as well as the power steering pump as the mounting points were different between the air and water cooled. Having done timing chain guides and rails on decent amount of M/S62s it looks like you would be able to retrofit an air cooled alternator on there without to much trouble. I've never done one on an M62 but it looks like you would need to start with the lower timing cover from an M62 with an air cooled alternator. The drive belt system should be similar, after that you can get the upper radiator hose for an an air cooled setup. But as you stated the water cooled alternators are fairly reliable on these motors. A little more expensive than the air cooled but there are benefits. I applaud you for putting this much thought and planning into your swap. I've never swapped an E53 designed motor into an E39 but we have done a E46 motor into an E53. It was the 3.0 engine but the swap was very simple. The oil pan was the biggest difference between the setup of the two motors. We also swapped the accessories as well as the wiring harness from the E46 to the E53. Fairly straight forward but you have to pay attention to the subtle differences of each motor in regards to the chassis it was originally installed in. As stated before you seem to be taking your time and planning out this swap the right way. Best of luck to you, eager to see how this pans out.
