I swapped out the solenoid with a known good one from another car and it didn't make any difference. The engine sounds fine when first started. But once it warms up for a few minutes, the noise in the video comes back.

Looks like several others have had similar issues.
http://www.bimmerforums.com/forum/sh...aft-control-B1 I believe this issue can be caused by several different things. Low oil pressure in the secondary hydraulic tensioner on Bank 1, bad vanos seal, possibly worn chain guide on the secondary hydraulic tensioner. I think it's best to drop the oil pan to inspect for debris, this is the quickest thing to do that may point to the culprit. Past that, the timing covers will have to come off.... and that's where the "fun" begins.

The verdict is in: Broken timing chain guides.
Whenever shit like this happens, it really makes me question my 20+ years of loyalty to BMW. Sometimes I wonder if I should just sell them all and buy a couple of Hondas. Yes, they're boring as hell, but at least I won't have to spend every single weekend working on them! I pulled the Bank 1 valve cover and with it off I can see the top 3 or 4 inches of the center U-shaped guide. And as much of it as I can see is bare metal - no plastic at all. And the chain is very loose. So the sound in the video I posted is the chain slapping against the metal remains of the guides. So now I have to take the engine apart again - even though I've barely put 1,000 miles on it since I checked the guides and they were fine!

To be honest, it shouldn't be much of a surprise. Every M62 I've seen on this forum save for maybe 2 of them have needed timing chain guides after 120k, and on 110k+ you are on borrowed time in my observances.
Sorry you have to tear her open, but after that debacle I think you can drive the piss out of it for a while

It's not a surprise. The M62 chain guides seem to have a 100% failure rate. I'm pissed because it only has 109K miles and I just checked them.
