New Wheels... Wheels Arrived! Wheel Pron Page 6

Allright guys, finally putting a nice set of wheels on the 4.8is and couldn't settle for just a set of replicas like I put on the old 4.4i. I like this truck too much and even my wife didn't want to throw some heavy cheapo wheels on it.

Soooooo... with Modbargains/Forgestar running some decent Cyber Week deals I ran across the Forgestar CF5V. I was debating between the F14 and CF5V but the wife liked the latter better... and gave me the okay on getting them in a brushed face/charcoal barrel finishing. After $300 Forgestar discount and $50 Modbargains code +$200 finish charge +shipping the total was $1898.95. I don't have experience with custom wheels, but that seemed like a decent deal to me on a set of custom wheels that will be lighter than factory.

I ordered them in 20x9.5 fronts and 20x11 rears. The offsets are, within reason, whatever I want them to be. They are going to contact me this week to discuss fitment desires and that led me to some questions.

Question 1: How big of a tire difference diameter is tolerated by the Xdrive? The factory size tires have no difference in rolling diameter.

I want to run wider tires in the rear... leaning towards 335's. Unfortunately I can't find a front size in a reasonable width in an equal overall diameter. Sooooo... I might have to go with 285/40/20's fronts and 325/35/20's rears which have an equal overall diameter. If there is a tolerance in overall diameter by the Xdrive it would change the above.

Question 2: What offsets would get me as close to fender flush on the tire, not the wheel. For the fronts I was leaning towards a +42 which, combined with the extra 5mm of tire width (assuming 285 series tire), would end up pretty close I think since the stock tire sits ~8mm inside the fender according to my measurements.

The rears are harder to calculate since the wheel size is changing a tad. Luckily wheel/tire size calculators are pretty good these days. I'm thinking of going with a +24 on the 11" wheel as it's the lowest available offset for that wheel. The stock tire sits 25mm inside the top of the fender flare. So, I should be gaining 6mm from the wheel and 5mm more from the tire if my thinking is correct. It could be wrong... I've been looking through so much wheel and tire info/pricing/etc that I could be fried. Which is the reason for this post.

With the tire sizes chosen ($$$$$$) my speedo would be a little further off since it's currently generous by ~2-5mph depending on speed. Not by much though... less than 1mph most likely. Let me know what you guys think of the above... and if I got something wrong, let me know.

And here are the wheels:

This is the finish I chose. Can't find a picture of the CF5V in this finish though... so this is the F14.

Okay first let me say that I think you have picked a pretty nice wheel to accentuate the X5 4.8is. I have a question are the wheels hubcentric to the BMW or do they require the hubcentric rings? Your tire size choice is a good one for the width of the wheels that you are picking. Can't wait to see them on your ride.

Thanks Jay. We tried to find a wheel that we thought looked like it might be an upgrade premium wheel offered by the dealer. They will get BMW roundel center caps to further the idea.

As for the center bore... I don't know really. There is no mention of center bore on their website so I won't know until I talk to Forgestar this week, possibly tomorrow, to discuss fitment specifics. I'm guessing they will be drilled with the factory sized center bore, but that's just a guess.

I'll update after I speak with them this week.

I don't have an answer for question one, but this might help with question two.

Is there a reason you want to go staggered?

Thanks for that Josh! Going to give it a gander.

As for staggered... I love the super fat tire look in the rear. I've never had a problem with needing to have tires rotated (broken down) from side to side rather than front to back. It's a little more expensive, but that's not a huge issue. Running the larger size all the way around would be waaaaaayyyyyy more expensive too. As long I can get 30,000 miles out of a set I'll be happy.

I know it's not for everyone, and certainly adds a level of inconvenience... but what can you do? The heart wants what the heart wants.

Yeah on the X5 staggered is a good way to go. I had considered going square on my 4.6is and I even have the two additional wheels rear wheels for the front to make it square but the tires are just so huge for front tracking. So I am sticking with the staggered application but I do run 25mm spacers on the front of the X. On my E39 M5 I run rear OEM style 65s all the way around the car but I use a 265 tire on front and a 285 on the back and it works well.

In the long run, you will save money with a square setup.

Nice wheels man.

Oh I definitely agree with that. I am aware it will cost me twice as much money over every 60,000 miles. I just really love the look of a nice set of staggered wheels. Never been one for square setups except on daily driven sedans.

Thanks, I think the wheels will look great on there. *fingers crossed*

Man just go for what you like (Staggered wheels). Half of the obsession of having an X5is is because you like what you see. Staggered wheels on these vehicles creates a menacing look on the X5s.Your wheels with the finish you've selected appear to be an instant winner. I am truly wanting to see this set-up on your vehicle. I hope you won't be offended if someone else copies your choice of wheels. I just wonder how it will look on a black X5

Those wheels look nice! Thin spokes, but in 20's they can pull it off.

CB is 72.6 and it would be best they make it that way. Wrong CB can cause wobble, even with adapters.

Do post pics when you get them in!
