Ahhhh dems were the days.
You mentioned Mechwarrior, which was a fantastic game back in the day! Have you seen the Battletech kickstarter campaign? It's funded now but you can still back it (more of a "preorder").

"What do I do for a living?" Self employed boiler service. Do you know what that means? I have to get back to work, 10 unemployed families are counting on me to work 80 hours a week. I work 1/2 days. 6am to 6pm.

^Apogee shareware was the shit. Don't forget - Bio Menace, ROTT, Blake Stone, Alien Carnage... The of course Sierra games like Kings Quest, Space Quest, LEISURE SUIT LARRY... Willy Beamish? Dude. Logged many hours in front of that .28 dot pitch SUPER VGA screen. Christmas brought a Creative labs Multimedia kit with a Sound Blaster Pro, and I was snagging bootleg games from a pirate BBS with my 14.4 USR over ZModem protocol. ROFL... I was like 14.

MOM GET OFF THE PHONE IM ON THE COMPUTER

I still maintain an old 486 DOS box and fire it up from time to time.

Broderbund... yes sir. And the Sierra King's Quest games... oh man. US Robotics modems, lol loving the memories. I rocked a Sound Blaster as well. Paired with a Logitech Thrustmaster joystick.

I used soooooooo many hours of AOL free trial offers! While my Dad was rocking Prodigy. I still remember the screen rendering the graphics ridiculously slow... and having to print reports on HP laserjets that weighed more than I did.

Best game ever!

My first PC was an Apple IIe with a 14" amber monochrome monitor. My first game was one of those 4" X 5" code books you bought at Radio Shack and typed the code from the book and saved it to a floppy drive. F-15 Strike Eagle! That was in 1984-1985. My first "PC" was a 286... can't remember for sure, but think it was running at 12 Mhz. Then a 386 with 4MB of RAM, and then a 486 DX2 66 (soon replaced with a DX4 100) with an optical (CD) drive and a 100MB hard drive. I was the cat's ass! ...SMOOTH...
