Ahh. Maybe I should have been paying more attention.

FTFY. The newer bags are made by Petri (as far as I can tell), which is a division of Takata. I think some petri bags have recently been recalled in VWs and Audis.

I'm not saying don't do it, just don't think by doing this you'll avoid a recall. I thought about upgrading to the facelift until I found out who made the bag.

very good info. Then I "may" set my priority to something else, like running board, sport seats :P

Why not just save the original steering wheel and airbag?

so in summary.... .... it's safe to assume that if I buy a round airbag on eBay to fit the nice thick sport steering wheel i recently bought.... the possibility is there that I may be buying a 'recalled airbag' ?
I wonder how much a new round airbag is from the dealer...

So far they have not been recalled as far as I know. I do not know what kind of propellant is used in those bags either, so I am just speculating based on what has been developing.

my 2 cents, for those trying to upgrade out of the air bag debacle, the facelift sport wheel may or may not be a good choice. It's still a nice wheel and a worthy upgrade. I don't know what kind of support you'll see from BMW in the event that it is recalled and it is a retrofit.

Buying an airbag new from BMW may offer you some guarantee of an exchange if it ever does get recalled.

Here is the cheapest new facelift airbag that I can find from BMW. PN 32303447095

I think we need to clear up the airbag recall/no recall debate.

Per BMW AG and the Federal NHTSA Agency, the bags ARE under recall. Recall Campaign # 15V-318.

The Description of Repair is, "The driver-side front air bag module will be replaced free of charge when parts become available".
