Trust me...I did it and I'm sure others have pulled this off as well...............Phil
This is a really interesting idea... One of the things that's been holding me back from getting the flared rear wheel arches on my 4.4 is that I'd need to get an entire 4.8 rear bumper to do it right. But if this trick works, then that would save a lot of cash

It works. One of the members posted pics on how to do it by modifying the fenders with a Dremel to accept your stock flares.

Wrong you don't need a whole new bumper, just get these and add them to your existing bumper:

02SUPPORT REAR LEFT BUMPER TRIM151127046919$127.2202SUPPORT REAR RIGHT BUMPER TRIM151127046920$127.22

http://www.realoem.com/bmw/showparts...22&hg=51&fg=15

And it will complete the 4.6/4.8 flared wheel arches look.

I know because I have done it on my X5.

I'm sure you're right... but I have heard several dissenters say that they've seen problems with the flares coming off, etc. on the '04+ facelifted X5's when the 4.8 bumper is not used. I can see that there are ways around this (as you and some others have proven!) but I'm not too adventurous or experimental with my X. Having said that, though, I'm definitely interested in more info on proven alternatives.

I was a bit worried like you were but took the plunge and just did it

I love the look now, have a look at the pictures above that I just posted.

Whatever you decide best of luck.

Hey I think we should set up another forum here for dealer education. They obviously do not know the subtleties of the products they sell and need to be enlightened. Perhaps we can charge them for some real world Technical Reference?!

Oy vey!

My dealer quoted me $3800 for this mod on my 4.8is.

I have ordered a set of aftermarket ones, they are aluminum billet plates that attach to the existing molding. They will not be as wide as the OEM ones, but I think they will look pretty good.

Ill post pics when i get them
