M54 Tin Can Metal Rattle 2000 RPMs

In the hopes of curing someone else's headache now and in the future...I found the cause of my "Tin Can" metal rattle sound that occurred when my foot was on the gas (1800-2000 RPMs). It was the aluminum heat shield (A) touching the exhaust manifold (B). By simply bending the heat shield vertically, the sound is GONE!!!! The rivets on the shield actually break probably from expansion and contraction causing the heat shield to settle against the manifold slightly leading to the "tin can" rattle when accelerating.

As many of you know there are quite a few threads out there for various M54 powered vehicles but very little definitive conclusions. Hope it helps!

SHUT THE FRONT DOOR

I may have been chasing this sound for years - you just bent it up a bit all along the shield?

Bend it up...thats it.

I said the same thing. The funny thing is my local BMW dealer actually solved this problem for me. I should add they quoted $1,000+ to replace them because the whole exhaust manifold has to come off. In lieu of that I asked what else they can do.....they said we can try to bend it up slightly.

I was going to take an actual picture of my engine but its been pouring all day. May add tomorrow.

Please note there are 2 of these plates in a row along side the engine. Mine was the first of 2 as indicated in the picture.

Exhaust Manifold Gasket - Part 11621732969

Exhaust Manifold Gasket is the proper term. The heat shield exposed is integral. Below is a picture of them.

WOW

I hope this solves it for me - I always thought to myself when hearing my X take off if someone else was driving it or when accelerating at lower speeds or perhaps next to a concrete median where the sound reflects that it always sounded tinny under the engine! Will give it a try, if it fixes it for me you are the man.

I'm wondering if you can change the gasket by just unscrewing the exhaust manifold at the top or do you also have to disconnect it under the car?

I was able to simply pull off those covers by hand.
The other half is screwed between the manifold and the engine.
I guess by design the two pieces were held together but separated with time.

Always thought they were just 1 piece. No wonder mine rattles only when cold, which make sense.
