window noises after slamming door whilst window in down position

Happy new year to all, well drivers side been working and making funny noises when winding up or down for as long as I remember, always seemed to make more worrying noises if I slammed shut the door whilst the window was in the down position, subsequently when winding back up I can only describe the noise as a cracking noise. This would always subside in time….

Well today I had the window down about an inch, slammed door shut(forgot this was bad), then on winding window down it started to make a noise as if glass was snagging on rubber…..in my wisdom only thing I had handy was some GT85 lubricant with ptfe (bike stuff) and 2 squirts along bottom length of outer trim whilst window closed and also at 90 degrees side of door where the glass runs through the rubber seal…seems to have helped greatly…..anyone had any experience with this window issue and if there any other preferable lube I should have shot down there in the window crevice? suffice to say many will point be in the direction a new winding mechanism or clips that attach to it but for now any input much appreciate yet again.

Slamming X5 doors with windows down is a no no. I would expect that either the plastic clips that hold the glass to the carrier or the plastic carrier sliders are broken. Possibly also the bolts that hold the carrier in place are loose now.

Unless you can just ignore that sound, you should pull the panel and inspect everything while the window travels up and down. You will probably see where it is binding and what part busted. Those little plastic things break easily, but are cheap...that's why they used them.

When you look at the bushing that holds the glass to the carrier, you will see that an eighth of an inch of plastic is all that keeps the window aligned, and that if that breaks or becomes loose, the window will not travel straight up the guides because the window is concave.

If your window clips or regulators haven't been addressed recently - you need 2x BMW black plastic window clips from the dealer, plus 2 of the "slider clips" per side -

The plastic gets brittle from years of use, do it proactively before it fails - I repaired both sides and the windows are tight as can be, I got my "slider clips" from RegulatorFix.com for $12 / pair and the BMW window clips were $3 or $4 so for $20 per side and a couple hours of work -

Thanks same rubbish quality plastic on the e46 windows too! I bought aftermarket metal/plastic clips a while back when i had first scare, so wont have to replace complete carrier....

Thanks for the reply......I reckon it is just a clip or a loose bolts as you say, the wire part of the mechanism has yet to be mangled and twisted as when that happened on our e46 the window would just not wind up at all and took alot of manual labor to close it until repair-either way VERY disappointing that the plastic bits are so flimsy on this and other modern beamers

Yes which is why I went with the aftermarket slider clips - they are much beefier and more durable, and you do not need to replace whole regulator and if you have medium to small hands you can replace them in situ without removal -

The car electrician has conveniently small hands and is a wiz at whipping off the door handles etc etc so this should be easy for him once I give him the 'sliders' and new clips that hold the window, do you recommend swapping out all items 3,5,6,7 as shown on RealOEM.com - Online BMW Parts Catalog

I replaced 5,6,7 because I like having new hardware with my clips so it was the pair of slider clips and the black plastic clips (#7) and 2 bolts and 2 nut/bushings (#6 and #7) - #3 is fine you can leave it

Ok fella appreciate reply....heard good idea to carry duct tape in case window suddenly falls then pulling up window and taping it to a closed position if it does, but won't the gunk from the tape be a pain to remove safely from the top of the door & glass after removing it in preparation for work....

A 2x4 wedged under the carrier, dampened by a towel works in a pinch
