X5chemist will become famous soon enough
Yup, mine is down for maintenance. The rear wheel bearings are loud above 45 MPH. I plan to replace them next week. Plus, wait for an OEM hitch to arrive for installation. The last major maintenance item on my list since purchase, a new fuel pump.

As a person with two E53s and two airhead beemer motorcycles (one 31 years old, the other 45) I can relate. Heavily. :-)

I have a friend's 2019 Audi A8L for the summer, while he is in Michigan.

Today I went to start it and got the Christmas light dashboard and the engine didn't start.... then it wouldn't turn off.

I had a lunch appointment so took the X5. When I came back the Audi was still on :/

Turns out it was probably the CR2032 battery in the key fob. The old battery was at 2.8V. No low battery warning, though Google says there should have been.

I left it on the charger for the afternoon and it did a full reboot when I started it again this evening. At least most of the settings like phone connections are stored in NVRAM.

Modern vehicles!!

I know it's a joke, but honestly - 23 years as a primary vehicle. I'm figuring I've saved a ton of money and with my trusted Bentley Manual and this forum, I've done nearly all the work and learned about car repair. My old baby 2003 is going to be fixed as soon as I'm back from vacation. Got the new fuel filter and also got another fuel pump to have in my parts bin! Goal is to pass 300k miles. I'm at 234k now.

I agree. When I run the numbers to keep my 2006 on the road all these years it was much cheaper than a monthly car payment. I'm about 3500 miles away from 300k. Should hit it around the end or the year. I will likely be doing a newer engine swap around that time as well.

^ Agree with Meestahbig above!
Our 2001 3.0 Sport 5 Spd manual has run very, very well over its 25 life, for us...

A few non-maintenance repairs, over the decades, but practically the 'costs' have been minimal imo, for a car that is this old, has ~145,000 miles and has never been 'babied', though I have maintained it well, imo.

I continue to drive it near daily, here in my Geezer/RetiredBumDom years and I think I would get in it and do a very long trip in it, if 'I' could stand doing a long trip, , but would really not worry about it 'getting there'.

My wife/CEO has her 'third' BMW Suv in the past 9 years, and none of those three can carry my ol'E53 bag, except maybe for better mpg, which is really of no consequence for us.

I am knocking on my 79 th yearand time is ticking, and I could buy any new car I wanted to without even pinching our nest egg...But few to none out there in new car land really excite me, fwiw.

This 25 yr old X5 and my 24 yr old Vette Vert are the two best cars I have owned in ~ 62 yrs of lots of different cars, in my experience.
