Good day all!!

I must say, most of the comments in this thread had me rolling with laughter!! I love it!!

I have never owned an M5, but I'm on my third 540i/6... Tweaked with tasteful mods to compete with the best...

I also own a 2002 4.6is... And a 2004 4.4L that I rebuilt from the ground up... Pulled-the-crank-from-the-block kind of rebuild... It was interesting... Today, it is stout and smooth... I am currently faced with the same issue with my 2006 4.4L, but it might be beyond rebuild...

Currently owning these vehicles, I would pick the 4.6is or a PFL 4.4L... I should have gotten the 2003 4.4L that was on craigslist instead of the 2006... Just because parts are more readily available... I do not like the automatic transmission on either version X5... Although the 4.6L is tuned really well... Even my better half likes it cause it responds when she needs it...

I don't like the automatic so much that I have taken on the chore of pulling it in favor of the manual we have in our E39's... I have to finish the 2006 before I can start on the conversion, so says the better half... BUT, after I'm done, I think I will have BEST of the E53 and E39 combined!! I can't wait!!

Cheers!!!

I would do a 4.6, but only because I'd do a RWD conversion with a manual. I have a late 06 build 3.0 that does my daily activities fine..

Thanks for the feedback.

I think I'll hold out for a 4.6is.

I'm keen on this example

https://www.nettiauto.com/en/bmw/x5/8584287 low miles (125k) for this country anyway and reasonably priced in comparison, but not interested in a trade with my m5 as he's looking for a newer e70. Imported from our neighbouring country Sweden.

The owner talks of the "typical" estoril blue problem of the paint flaking on the inside of the door sills.. ? News to me, have you guys heard of this problem? Not a biggie anyway. Timing chain is silent for what its worth.

I could trade with this 4.4l fl and get 1.5k. https://www.nettiauto.com/en/bmw/x5/8616275
The typical cooling pipe leaks been done, but no other inherent faults. Had a few fault codes like the MAP sensor but they they didn't come back immediately at least. Like I said I had the valvetronic issue with a similar car previously so thats giving me the chills. Also our x3 and audi allroad are the same grey colour...

..and lets face it folks, its cool to have the worst fuel efficient x5 ever build..

here's my m5

Heard of it, but never specifically about an E53- and especially not a specific color. Had a buddy with a 1997 Estoril E39 and he never had paint peeling.

The problem comes as a result of a 'typical' bad respray. On the door sills, I have seen peeling from overspray that landed there from other body work. Over the years of sitting there, like any contaminate, overspray that sat atop the clear in the sills. Started with little bumps easy to remove with clay bar. Eventually pitted the clear underneath. Raised one or two bubbles and then started to peel for reel. If it was bad enough, you can probably run your hands lightly over the sills without peeling (yet) and hear a light swoosh as they pass the over spray. It takes a bit of a trained ear and touch, but it's easy to spot once you have it down.

Check for blue paint on the bodywork under the car by the affected doors. If they didn't seal the doors for over spray, they probably didn't seal under the body either.

Yes, the estroil has peeling problems. Mine does and while not the worst damage that could happen still annoying if your OCD. Apparently (what I've gathered) with lead based paints being phased out during the early 2000's and the rarity of the estroil is was never really converted properly with being water based. Basically paint doesn't fully adhere to the primer. It is the downside of the color but is my favorite color on the X's.
