Then take a BFH and give a quick smack toward the left side of the car. The radiator hose is in the perfect place to catch the wrench. Has never taken me more than 2 whacks to loosen. I guarantee its easier than the official tool. The official tool is nothing more than a steel bar with two holes that line up with nuts on the fan clutch (with a bite missing so it fits around the clutch body) easy to fabricate. I was going to make my own until I found a YouTube video showing the method I use. It wouldn't hurt to have a string attached to the wrench in case it came off but there is so little room I'm not sure it's even possible. Obviously the wrench had to be long enough to clear the intake scoop. First time I removed the fan was to change the thermostat. I've had it off about 3-4 times. It's easy enough to remove I take it off for some elbow room most recently when I DIY refurbished my alternator ($20 kit vs $325 replacement: replaced the slip rings and brushes). The trickiest part is bringing the shroud up at the same time and finding any mystery clips holding it on. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

^That's the method I've always used on every BMW fan clutch. Never failed me. Though just recently I found the tool on Houston Craigslist along with an e53 Bentley manual for $40 so I couldn't turn that down...

I use a metal hammer not rubber mallet. Better impact. Works flawlessly.

^I tend to agree with Fifty the further this goes. Sorry mcfee03, it's not looking good. Sounds like you might end up spending more money trying to DIY than just taking it somewhere.
The oil in the plug sockets is most likely the valve cover gasket seals. Very common. And it can cause misfires too as it will affect the spark under certain conditions. You could not have spilled enough oil on the engine to get into those holes. Unless you remove the upper engine cover when you do oil changes?

I get where you're coming from.
I've been very clear that I'm a total beginner hear (ie title) but I AM keen to learn. I have my intake off which is a huge and scary feat for someone who's never owned a car. I've bought several tools - what are you suggesting I need? And the reason I'm removing the fan is to manually "turn" the engine with the spark plugs removed - right? In order to check if the DISA pin is in there?

Exactly. I suggest you invest in a full set of tools and purchase the special tools that are needed to work on your truck. There are many and you will need them.We're all here to help, but you have to help yourself as well. |

Belly pan for sure like I mentioned. The same wrench is needed to turn the engine slowly by hand no whacking with hammer. That said you can get a lot more elbow room to work with fan and shroud removed.

You need to remove the belly pen to check it. I think it's held by 4-6 bolts.
