Oil change, now idles poorly (beginner)

^That's the method I've always used on every BMW fan clutch. Never failed me. Though just recently I found the tool on Houston Craigslist along with an e53 Bentley manual for $40 so I couldn't turn that down...

I don't have a spark plug socket so I don't think I can get the plugs out?

I use a metal hammer not rubber mallet. Better impact. Works flawlessly.

Dude. I'm sorry, but you clearly don't have the mechanical skills nor the necessary tools to work on your truck. I respectfully suggest you either invest in a proper set of tools and study what you need to know or take your truck to your local indy and have them work on it. I appreciate you're trying to DIY, but it requires a certain level of skill with tools and things mechanical which you don't seem to have.

^I tend to agree with Fifty the further this goes. Sorry mcfee03, it's not looking good. Sounds like you might end up spending more money trying to DIY than just taking it somewhere.

The oil in the plug sockets is most likely the valve cover gasket seals. Very common. And it can cause misfires too as it will affect the spark under certain conditions. You could not have spilled enough oil on the engine to get into those holes. Unless you remove the upper engine cover when you do oil changes?

I get where you're coming from.

I've been very clear that I'm a total beginner hear (ie title) but I AM keen to learn. I have my intake off which is a huge and scary feat for someone who's never owned a car.

I've bought several tools - what are you suggesting I need?

Exactly. I suggest you invest in a full set of tools and purchase the special tools that are needed to work on your truck. There are many and you will need them.We're all here to help, but you have to help yourself as well.

1. 32MM wrench (long) to remove the fan

2. A spark plug remover tool attachment for my socket?

FYI: I just replaced the CCV on my intake, but I won't put it back on until I turn the engine and check the valves. Correct?

Yes, a long 32mm wrench and a spark plug socket. I recommend a magnetic one like this: https://www.amazon.com/Spark-Socket-...g+socket&psc=1

Yes, you want to find that missing pin before you fire up the engine.

You don't need to remove the fan to turn the engine. Just get a spark plug socket, remove the plugs, go under the engine and turn the crankshaft clockwise.

You gotta learn somewhere and I think you are doing well so far. Asking decent questions and such.

Have you removed the belly pan on the underside of the engine and checked that really well. It could have fallen out when you removed the DISA.
