Thanks for giving your vehicle info. It helps paint a clearer picture of why some may have #7 & #17...and why some do not.

I wonder how many 4.8is e53 X5s actually came with a full size spare? I thought they got the 19" compact spare...which could easily accommodate #7 & #17 in the diagram...and as you mentioned...the handle/strap set-up to remove the full size spare isn't necessary if you have the compact/emergency 19" spare.

Just hopped on realoem to look.
The spare is a 19x5 emergency wheel. Light alloy.

Will edit.
I gotta say tho. With the air compressor and all, I don't really see how a full size spare would fit with any cover at all below the carpeted wooden floor or pullout floor.

I bought the spare removal kit, mainly for the woman.
She's got short arms as is, although I seriously doubt she'll ever change a wheel herself.

I imagine the full size spare was an option back in the day, and most probably opted not to.
