New X5 guy

Bought an 06 3.0 slushbox and it has 103k on it now, dark blue with a tan interior in pretty darn good shape.. I think I got a good deal on it and drove a long way to buy it as usual..

So far I've replaces the china MAF with a new siemens, put an intake boot on it, replaced the 2 rear tierod like control arms on it, the ones responsible for the rear toe, put rotella T6 in it, and have been driving it..

Runs darn good, impressive torque, shifts good.. I'm surprised how different it runs than the S50 in my M3..
I just drove the X to chicago and back and got about 20.5 MPG @ 85 MPH and about 25.5 MPG @ 65 MPH on the computer, no CEL the whole way but this morning it threw a CEL again so I'll have to go scan it again and see what it's crying about this time.. Runs perfect..

It was a mess as far as the computer when I got it until I put a new MAF on it and reset all the memory and adaptations so I'm definitely making progress..

It still has a bit of a vibration at highway speed but I'm chasing that stuff down aswell, I'm going to check all the bushings again the best I can, fix anything not right, and have it aligned..

Not quite perfect yet but close.. I can't imagine running one of these things not doing your own work though..

So hi everybody!!
Anyone want to trade me for a manual? This thing will be sorted out about perfect soon

In all reality I hope for this to be the family DD and put another 100k on it and a bunch of hard winters..
Hoping it will be reliable after I get tuned into it, I'll fix and maintain it and stuff but I'm going to drive it hard..

It feels like it has an LSD because when you turn the traction control off it scoots around similarly to my subaru, it likes to kick the tail out but throttle response is akin to a wet sponge..
Wondering how complicated it is to convert to a real throttle cable and also install heated seats.. It needs a remote start too and the auto lift trunk springs..

I am really just getting settled in with it, it's new to me still..

I'm hoping it is going to be fun enough to drive for me to fall in love with it, it needs to rip and be fun to drive hard especially in the winter..

The 4X4 is pretty darn good, nice and RWD biased for the feel and it'll crawl it's way through some snow even with all season tires on it.. Drove it through my yard a few times in atleast skidpan plowing deep snow and it did damn good.. Right now everything is ice due to a recent thaw and it does pretty good kicking all 4 wheels up to scoot in the right direction..

It's ride is really sportscar firm for what it is.. That's great for my normal everyday bombing around on winter backroads but it could be a bit softer on the highway. Chassis feels nice and stiff, no twisting on severely unlevel surfaces..

I hate ABS but the ABS in this X is one of the least terrible ones I've ever used for any amount of time, it also doesn't seem to be easily disabled and I think maybe it kindof can't be disabled due to it needing it for the 4x4 so IDK.. Need to look into it more..
It's not too terrible to live with to kill the entire vehicle experience but I'd jerk it in an instant if I could.. I admit it is pretty good ABS but their are definite benefits to being able to lock up where I drive IMO..

My MDX ABS was so bad it was outright dangerous, wouldn't let me stop for like 100 yards at 5MPH coming down a slight hill off an oilwell/seasonal road with about 8" of fresh snow on.. The X doesn't seem to do this..

Cargo, heh..
I burn a pellet stove in my house, took the X5 to get bags of pellets, I put 1/2 ton of pellets in the back of it and it still drove awesome.. Seems to do pretty good with that..

The stereo is pretty crap, sounds worse when it's not loud, it has CD DVD DSP stuff so that makes it complicated..
I've been looking at those android stereo replacements like on ebay but it doesn't seem they work with the DSP and amp so I'd probably have to amp it myself from the trunk and just send RCAs back there like I do the E36 but I'd like to use the stock speakers so I'd have to fool with a bunch of channels and Xovers and all that gets expensive fast not to mention a LOT of tedious work..
What do you guys do for your stereos? Any way to get an AV IN to it? God way to take a signal off of it to add a sub? What do you do for aftermarket head units?

What a rolling project this X is like every other car..

Welcome FastEddie313! I am with you on the wet sponge throttle response thing, seems to be a problem to varying degrees on these vehicles and to make it worse mine doesn't always do it. BMW had a programing update for this that helps but doesn't fix the problem entirely, you might want to check on that. Interestingly scanning the DME seems to reset the adaptive strategy and make it better for a short time until it learns itself back. I kinda sort of had this problem with my e30 and came up with a bit of a fix for it but haven't tried that yet on the X. With you on the stereo as well but I think when I do tear it out I'll be installing a Nakamich TD700 cassette deck so I think I'll be alone with that upgrade! Cheers

Learn to love the drive by wire throttle. Here's the thing: it's very on purpose non linear throttle. If you very slowly depress the throttle you get very fine grain throttle response, it's so you can climb up a bump without a jump in speed once you get on top.

Try this: bump into a curb perpendicular then slowly add throttle just 1% at a time, you can climb up on the curb where once on top you won't accelerate once up on top.

The throttle curve is designed to help at slow speed and works too greatly improve traction and it works STUNNINGLY.

I've driven out of 3" of ice that I parked in as water without any wheel spin! That would not have happened with a linear throttle!

I've upgraded my tires to run on flat with an extra 500# capacity I can carry 1500# load no problem. 6600# gross on occasion though the rated Max is about 6000#.

The other day I drove one wheel onto a pair of wheel chocks to raise up the car. As always just climbed right up.

One time I accidentally drove over when I backed up I forgot I chocked the tire while working on the front wheel. I barely felt it it just went right over (4" tall wheel chock).

When you accelerate from a stop on low friction surface no matter why, you get more acceleration every time because of it.

Now on to the ABS: find a big open parking lot that is very low friction and start into a strong curve and hit the DISC button. When you hit the traction limit the car will yaw so fast you may end up sideways or backwards!

The car absolutely requires ABS for stability. When my abs has failed the car feels worse than my rear drive Camaro Z28 In the snow.

You have control over ABS not kicking in just don't push the pedal so hard:

If you are skidding you are not stopping as fast as if the wheels are still turning so do some test firm brake applications to determine how much force you can use without abs kicking in and use slightly less. Skidding will add 10% to stopping distance but you may end up backwards.

Full ABS stop on low friction will add 30-40% to stopping distance but you can steer into the obstacle of your choice (car, tree, fence, house). No car was this more dramatic on than my Z28!

You can let up pressure a tiny bit if abs kicks in and get 33% better stopping power if you get abs to stop cycling. You'll never get better stopping by manual brake application. Maximum stopping is achieved when wheels are right at the limit of adhesion with no skidding or ABS. The best way to achieve this: ABS on (in case) but brake at the limit of grip without ABS kicking in. If abs kicks on let up 5-10% on brake pedal and instantly get more grip

That's interesting about your spongy throttle response. I've driven several 4.4l and 3.0l over the past week before I settled on a 4.4l with mushy or lagging throttle. The other ones I drove were responsive has heck, no lag. I almost bought the 3.0 over the 4.4 because of that but I'm thinking it's vacuum related and I can fix it. Plus the thing is mint. I'm sure I'll have it sorted out soon. Just add it to the list.

There are two potentiometers in the throttle in case of failure. if one is soft failing you can get a very spongy throttle. Get some readings and compare to other like models if you can.

Priorities are #1 the MAF code throwing a CEL.. It runs perfect but I'd like my CEL off..

#2 My alignment is now crap after replacing some suspension components, I need to figure out how to conclusively check all of my bushings and balljoints so I don't take it in for an alignment to hear they can't align it because it needs this this and this bushing replaced..

#3 Test this aux water pump system..

#4 Screw with that passengers mirror sometime.. Research..

#5 My drivers floorboard is getting a lot of water on it when it rained dripped right onto the deadpedal from the dash.. Need to chase this but it's a frozen wasteland tundra out here so I'll probably have to wait till it's warm out..

#6 sunroof undershade things are wonky.. I only have the front one, I would like to find a replacement rear one in light tan some time.. Fix the rattle my singular shade makes and why does it have a wire on its left rear corner?

#7 My drivers door window gets stuck if I roll it all the way down and something seems loose in the door, like a loose track the glass runs in or something.. I need to pull the door panel and do some exploratory surgery here.. Research..

#8 check licence plate light ding ding ding..

Not too bad of a fixit list..

#5 Possible pinched sunroof drain tube in the A pillar.

#7 CAUTION: DO NOT ROLL THE WINDOW DOWN UNTIL THIS IS FIXED!
Probable failure of the black window mount clips or window regulator. This causes the window to tilt sideways and jam in the tracks. If the window goes all the way down you will not be able to get it back up. Not something you want to have happen in the winter.

Rear control arms will cause vibrations at speed. Did you say your cel was MAF related?

Right..
I bought this thing like 300 miles from home in early december, it was snowing..
Got to a BK to have a snack before the highway and my window stuck down.. I was pretty scared I was going to have to drive it all the way with the window down..
GF did a quick search and we did the electrical tape wrapped needle nosed pliers trick to get the window back up..
Yep, something isn't right behind door #1..
