Here's a new one - bushing found at oil change

Hi guys,

I may have jinxed it when I said on the other thread "no issues" from the check valve that came out a few oil changes ago. Today, the shop found this with the oil. Something tells me this is really not good. It looks like it should be part of something that rotates. It is worn, so that helps that theory. So, any guesses?

Thanks!

It looks like part of one of the oil check valves on the head... But how the heck did it get out?

Have a read of this...

Hard to think it's that. There are no threads or any markings. Just the lip for what looks like an o-ring maybe. Here is an ECS link to the oil check valves up there.
ESC Part: ES#23184
BMW Part: 11367539857

Nothing on the piece resembles it or parts of it. A few oil changes back, my oil filter check valve let loose and came out with the oil change. Given this piece has now appeared, I'll source another oil pump assembly and in a few weeks have my shop drop the pan, have a look at everything on the bottom end and put in the new/used pump assembly. I'll destruct the unit they pull out to see if I can find the home of this part.

Reading the thread I linked, the ECS part you are looking at is the new part - that replaced the old part that was made in several prices and was prone to falling apart...

I ordered a new pump. When I get it all dropped I'll see if there was anywhere else the piece could have come from. And I'll dissect the old pump too. Goes in Oct 4.

Dropping it off at the indy tomorrow. It'll be there for a couple of days. He called to tell me the book says 12 hours for a pump swap. I'm sure there will be some "while they're in there" adders too. I am giving him this part and will have them dissect the old pump to see if came from there or keep looking until they find the source. I know the check valve let loose a few oil changes back - hoping this is part of it. The car is too nice to toss for a simple oil pump, right?

She also gets new pads and rotors, brake flush, plus some other stuff on the to-do list.

Part is from the inside of the oil pump. Indy disassembled it and found the source (yay!). They found another loose spring in there too. No pics, but I'll get when I pick it up and post. No other major surprises, but they are changing a lot out while they're there - motor mounts, alternator gasket (I just did it a few months back....), seals, gaskets, oil t-stat o-rings, etc. Plus my other list. I don't want the bill though.

Glad they were able to locate the parts original "home".

And the oil pump was still working?

I doubt I would be able to sleep too well if a part like that was in my sump! I'll bet you'll probably sleep better now!

That part came out sometime within the last 8,000km. No oil pressure lights, nothing weird. I know most people who have lost the check valve say no issues, but none have had this bushing fall out. Once I get the pump back I'll be able to see how it was still able to work. Glad it wasn't something higher up than the pump. Sleep better, yes. Waiting on the bill, no .

- oil change
- oil pump
- power steering flush
- front/rear diff oil
- brake fluid flush
- front to rear main brake lines
- pads, rotors, front sensor
- parking brake shoes + hardware kit
- 2 CCV valves
- engine mounts
- main belt
- AC belt
- air filter
- cabin filter
- upper and lower oil pan gaskets
- large oil pan o-ring
- 2 oil pump o-rings
- 2 diff to oil pan o-rings
- alternator bracket gasket
- 4 oil t-stat o-rings
- 2 cam sensor seals
