Looks like the dust cap and spline are about the same length

When I was under there the cap doesn't move on it's own.
Probably just needs the extended splines like you said. Sent from my SM-G965U using Tapatalk

I'm wondering if you can extend the effective length of the spline by modifying the dust cup.

Wow almost 2 years since my last post.
Basically life hit and my X5 got put to the back burner. I finally got an extended front shaft from cobra transmission. After install went up for a canyon drive and it was great no sounds, smooth with no hesitation either. Pulled to the side and ate lunch with the family. Started driving up more and the noise slowly crept back, made a sharp left turn while on a slight incline and the noise was back like before. If I let the X5 sit for a day or two it's fine but now seems incline and sharper turns brings it back. Anyone thinking it could be the rear shaft U-Joint and center bearing support that was needing replacement this whole time? I am close to giving up on this car now with how much I've put into it. Thanks in advance for any help! Sent from my GM1917 using Tapatalk

Have a second set of ears "chase plane" along side (my Segway is perfect for this job but jogging will work)
Confirm sound is coming from left or right side of car or front or back. A great way to find sounds is the remove the back seat and the two metal gas tank access hatches. It's stunning how much drivetrain sounds you don't hear. That click doesn't seem a robust as the front drive shaft it could be suspension but if not the front shaft first guess is bad CV

Get on the rear tire and grab the roof rails and rock the shit outa her. See if you can hear the noise. Make sure there is a extra set of ears around.

I don't think it's a suspension issue but a drive train one. That said that can be a promising test to root out uglies.

So I have been driving it yesterday and today there have been no sounds. Rocking the X5 also makes no noise as well. This has been city/freeway driving.
Thank you! Sent from my GM1917 using Tapatalk
