Overboost - I was just looking at that option. I think you just convinced me. I can then re-boot the old shaft and have it ready to go for the next failure. Of course none of the AAP's near me have it - have to drive to the other side of town! Now to see if I can get that sucker out without too much trouble.

AM.

Like overboost I went the china route and bought mine at autozone. $70 an axle I think and lifetime warranty.

If you get the iBus app and USB interface for the Android systems everything remains functional.

Does the ibus adapter work for a non Nav bmw unit? My e53 comes with a basic business CD unit. Non bmw Nav display. Will the ibus still work for me when I switch to Android head unit?

I had a lengthy post about my day, but I messed up and lost it. The torn boot destroyed my day. I was unsuccessful in removing the 36 mm axle nut. I borrowed a proper impact socket from AutoZone and finally have an excuse to upgrade my ancient C/P gun with Harbor Freight's Earthquake XT impact wrench. Progress to resume tomorrow.

I DID pick up the cheap axle from AAP for $65 after discount code. The boot has likely been torn for a while, so hard saying how much damage the existing joint has suffered.

Good call AM. For $65, it's not worth being down 2 days waiting on shipping. Like Crowz and I said, they are decent axle assemblies that will work just fine.

My middle son had a Subaru for a painful 3 years. For some reaon, it's well-known among Subaru loyalists that AM axles don't work well on Subies. He and I spent WAY too long pulling his axles out, cleaning, rebooting and re-greasing. I remember thinking.... this was simply not worth the time/effort.

If cheap axles can hold up for a few years, then I'll gladly skip the task of re-booting!

Ive never had one fail except on my s10 blazer. They have to be replaced in it every 200,000 miles. It has over 700,000 miles on it so I have changed them a few times but they always get about 200,000 miles each time.

The motor dies at 200,000 miles too so I usually do the motor rebuild or swap and the axles at the same time

The resler iBus adapter (and iBus app) ONLY work on Anroid aftermarket head units..... So yeah, it"ll work, as long as the android unit you choose has a spare USB input that can be used for the iBus adapter.
