OK my dad's X5 has a production date of 11/00. Miles when transmission went bad were 65,000. Hope this helps.

That helps a lot. It seems to be an issue with 01 or earlier trannys. Thanks for the info.

Just called the dealer, new transmission has been ordered. They are replacing the whole thing.

What turned out to be the problem with the transmission?

New transmission was ordered ($5,000), but while replacing it they found a coolant leak from the engine!

So they are going to fix that as well (CPO warranty). I asked what the problem with the transmission was and they said it was some internal electronic problem. Oh well, should be done by Monday.

Earlier in this string I surmised an electronic problem involving the servos. After viewing the TIS it seems that all of the transmissions internal electronics are associated with the valve body in which the solonoid valves (servos = execute shifting) are mounted and can be accessed by just dropping the pan and filter. It seems like overkill to R&R the whole transmission. Kind of like R&R of the engine because a spark plug has failed. The stealer probably makes a lot more $$$$$ by R&R of the whole transmission.

Is the stealer replacing the transmission with a NEW one or a REBUILT one?? If a new one thats good for you; if rebuilt I'd have a problem with it unless you know the rebuilder is qualified.

Hey, thanks for the info. I will definitely ask them before I go pick it up this week. If it is rebuilt should I insist that a brand new one be installed?

I would insist on a new one. If they were going to use a rebuilt one, they should have just rebuilt the original from the car IMO.
