Starter interlock?
Before I tear into the console, is there a starter interlock in there? Of course, whenever her car does one random failure, she won't drive it again until I'm 100% sure it's not going to give her more trouble. Now she's out in my E60... *crank = starter engaged and spinning the engine before it starts. I give the definition because crank/turn over/fire/run seem to mean different things to different people.

Yes there is most definitely a switch in the cabin at the gear shift, but also in the transmission. I'm not sure if the computer uses both but you can not crank the engine with out the car in neutral or park.
That said it's more common for the ignition switch to fail and cause the symptom you describe. You will get on, no crank, no error (like no ews match). It will be intermittent for a while before it dies. Did you have any wonky situation with the PRNDL display either on the dash or at the gear shift? If the dash display didn't follow the gear exactly, then I would lean towards the Problem being the connector on the transmission.

Yes - there is a lock-out. It won't crank unless the transmission is in Park or Neutral. If it was in Park or Neutral, then the switch that senses this may be bad or perhaps the wiring loom to the transmission.
I'm pretty sure there is a mechanical interlock on the gear selector also but this disables the removal of the ignition key in any other position other than Park.

You can't turn the key to zero with gear not in park. That's part of the mechanism that makes you put the brake on to pull out of park as well. What I don't know if the switch at the gear shift is part of the start interlock or just the one in the transmission.
I would look at the transmission connector either way. Mine was full of rusty water and wreaking havoc with the PRNDL display on the dash. I was lucky that "P" still was working so it always started, but that didn't help me because when the car thought I had 54th gear selected it made for very unfriendly shifts. Thanks. I was holding the key in the start position then pushed the shifter forward and it started to crank. It has started properly 9/10 times since it first happened.
The car used to belong to a friend and when he owned it we had to replace the ignition cylinder because the key was very hard to insert. That was a fun job.

That's a good sign to help track down the source of the problem.
Did you say you have INPA? (I can't scroll up to check on tapatallk). Pull up Realtime values of the transmission selector switch and see if you have distinct switches into and out of park. If you don't, also take note does the PRND light up properly on the dash. If there is any hesitation or dash doesn't show P until you push forward there is a problem with the transmission selector switch. On the 3.0 it's a pain to replace it's inside the transmission. But on the 3.0 it's actually more likely to be a fouled connector plug.

The Foxwell shows a live status of the interlock and would probably be a good idea to check when you get the error and see what it shows and also check the ews status then too.
Edit: I think the Foxwell also will let you disable the interlock too but I'm not sure... Sent from my SM-A730F using Tapatalk

I currently have no OBD tools. I'd planned buying Carly back when they offered free lifetime upgrades with the price, but now it's a subscription and I'm not sure what my best route is now.
I'll keep an eye on the PRNDL indicator - we're out and about in the X today.

For the money the foxwell scan tool is the best bang for the buck for diagnostics on the fly and can be kept in the back hatch storage compartments with no worry of it getting damaged. That's where I keep mine.
