Starter interlock?

Wife was out in her X5 today. When she went to start it at the mall it wouldn't crank*. I went out to check and it wouldn't crank* for me either. I pushed the gear lever forward and it then cranked* and started right up.



Before I tear into the console, is there a starter interlock in there?



Of course, whenever her car does one random failure, she won't drive it again until I'm 100% sure it's not going to give her more trouble. Now she's out in my E60...





*crank = starter engaged and spinning the engine before it starts. I give the definition because crank/turn over/fire/run seem to mean different things to different people.
