misfire code cyl 1,2 & 3 and exhaust cam sensor

2001 X5 3.0 build date 5/2000 157,000 miles
Driving with two grandkids in car seats to the beach today I lost power and limped to a rest stop. Seemed to be running on 3 cylinders. Schwaben showed the above codes. I pulled coil #1 and swapped it with #4 and no difference. I pulled the exhaust cam position sensor and it had a fair amount of oil on it. Now it won't start at all. Fortunately AAA only took an hour to come save me and my son was following and took the family to the beach.
I could use some help in the diagnosis. I cleared the codes to see if the misfire would follow the coil swap, it didn't and now it won't even start.
All my previous 10 BMW's didn't have vanos and I'm wondering if this is a symptom of a puked Vanos seal or a cam seal.
Going on vacation in a week and would like to get this resolved soon.
Thanks.
