Any schematics or explanations how to get to it ?
I didn't still catch if yours is pre 9/2003 M57 or post 9/2003 M57TU.

What was the actual code (low rail pressure on start up)? How much was the rail pressure while cranking?

Did you read the pages on the manual I gave you links to? Those pages answer your questions - but yes, you are going to have to remove the intake manifold - at least.

Again, try reading this...

Replacing Pressure Regulator: -

And here's the section on removing the intake manifold: -

I assume I have to remove intake manifold to get to it. Is there anything else I need to remove as well?
Thanks in advance

Why do you "assume" when the documentation clearly states that you need to remove it?

Yes - no doubt - you need to remove the intake manifold.

Update on the car problem.
I gave the car to BMW for a diagnostic check, they could only read low pressure in the common rail but they where not certain where the problem is. They need the car to start so they can do a full diagnostic check.
I was told that there was a 20% chance that the problem is the fuel pressure valve.
Now I have changed the fuel pressure sensor and valve and tired to start the car with no luck. I sprayed brake cleaner in the system and the car started straight away. I let the car run idol for 20 mins with no problems.
I switched it off and started it again but it didnt start, so sprayed brake cleaner again and it started. I assume the high pressure pump is fine since the car is starting with the spray.
Any suggestions guys?

You still didn't tell if we are talking about M57 or M57N engine. Though in either case a leaky injector the most probable problem. So measure injector leak off first.

So you already replaced the rail pressure regulator at the rear of high pressure pump?
