To change temp you press the trip odometer button while you turn the key off. Strangely that didn’t change the odometer to metric or back.

You have to have it coded back to miles if your odometer is reading in KM. Ask me how I know

No you do not. There is a procedure with the key in ignition and holding down a button that will do it as I actually performed it myself years ago for same reason
EDIT: damn it. I can NOT track down anywhere how the procedure goes, but after I did a repair, I had the same error happen on my dash High cluster where the kms changed to miles somehow and for some unknown reason, about 6 years ago and I had to learn how to fix it back. nothing else changed from metric tom imperial measurements, just the kms to miles... I can't track it down online or in my personal How To guides that I have been stockpiling for decades on my Bimmers... Sorry but it seems the software way will have to be the only way at the moment.

Interesting. Then I got taken to the cleaners I had an indy change mine from km to miles. I researched and researched and the only thing I could find is people saying it could be changed in the menu. It couldn’t. And people said it had to be coded so I had mine coded. I couldn’t find anything about a procedure with the key in the ignition holding down a button. An oversimplified description...
Coded means: change the instructions of what the module, BUS (think computer) will do when it meets or reads certain criteria. BMW's seem to have more electronic parts than a Radio Shack and makes me think that the lead engineer had stock in circuit boards. Sent from my SM-A730F using Tapatalk

There's a mix of things stated above...that may be getting conflated. You can change the OBC to display F° or C°. BUT...this is only the OBC that changes...not the instrument cluster's odometer. You can also change the distance unit (if you have the high cluster & MID or the high cluster and Nav) by going into SETTINGS. BUT...this does NOT change the instrument cluster's odometer...only the OBC and MID/NAV displays. {Change Ambient Temp Scale} {Change Distance Unit w/NAV} {Change Distance Unit w/MID...pres BC button until you see the selection circled in green in pic below} To change the instrument cluster (IKE) to read miles or kilometers...requires software/hardware coding equipment so that you can go in and change parameters in the IKE. See left column in image below of a screenshot of PA-soft...you select eiter miles or kilometers and this will change the instrument cluster's (IKE) odometer:
