Wow, well done! It certainly wasn't that easy on my 4.4 N62. I recall it as something I never want to do again.

Yeah, well, trust BMW to take something as (seemingly) simple as an engine mount and complicate it!

Still, I'm sure it is in part why these M57 diesel engines are so civilised.

Hi folks,

I know this is an old thread, but rather than starting a new one, I'm wondering if anybody has experience doing engine mounts on an E53 diesel (facelift version, if that makes a difference)?

I've done a heap of searching and found a few videos, but none cover the M57 engine.

I'd like to replace both mounts, but I especially need to replace the RH mount on a RH drive vehicle.
I've managed to get the mount free by undoing the 16mm nut on top and the two E12 bolts, but after raising the engine as far as it will go, I still can't get enough clearance to remove the mount.

I was considering undoing the bracket that bolts to the engine, but the front two bolts are impossible to get to.

Does anybody know if undoing the frame bolts on one side will provide enough room, or does the entire frame need to be dropped?

Many thanks!

I have done both mounts on my V8 and I can confirm that the subframe has to be lowered. I would imagine it's easier on the 6 cylinder engine.
It's not difficult, just a bit tricky using a car jack to hold the engine up. I didn't have a brace.
I actually did mine twice.. The first mounts I installed were ebay special and the vibration was worse than the old ones. So I put them back on..
I my case the vibration turned out to be the AC compressor so I would check all the ancillary spinning components first.
I also installed some tough rubber gaskets between the mounts and subframe to further reduce NVH.

I don't have a diesel, I have a 3.0 and I did not need to lower the subframe. the engine can be raised a little and with d=some maneuvering the mounts will come out and go in. IIRC I had to remove one mount arm from the engine, but that wasn't a big deal. You'll need the HF engine support.
