Driver’s door handle

Hi all.

I’m a new 2005 XX5 owner. I tried searching the forums but couldn’t find a thread for my question. Sorry if this has been covered.

My driver side exterior door handle feels like it barely functions. I have to pull it way harder than the other doors. It’s like it only engages the mechanism at the very top of the pull. I’m pretty sure I’m going to break the handle if this keeps up. It’s not a freezing issue. That’s an entirely different ball of wax. This happens 100 % of the time I open the door.

Any suggestions/solutions?

Thanks,
B

You have a broken Door Handle Carrier that needs to be replaced.

Here's a post with some good info.

Here are a couple of replacement videos.

I'd also suggest you either install the suite of BMW coding tools on an old laptop (INPA, PA Soft, NCS, etc) or find someone to code for you to turn off the two-press door unlock function. Unless someone already fixed it, I bet it takes two presses to unlock all your doors? This leads to broken handles on passenger doors as passenger pull hard after hearing the first click - while the passenger doors are still locked

you can turn off auto locking as well - as I did

heck there are a bunch of things you can turn off/on

That break can be repaired with a stainless zip tie. Search for my awr-fix on the dhc repair. Since it’s a lot of work to open up the door I would get the part in case it’s irreparable but if you can fix it return the part.

Also, fix the door actuator against freezing it is almost always the cause of the DHC break. If you put a piece of Teflon tape (sold for putting on bottom of mice) in the right place the door actuator will never freeze.

+1 on disable auto lock. My wife’s car has the feature enabled and 100% of her door lock motors failed yet my exact same model year and almost identical miles (180k) has all 4 door locks still working (though passenger door motor is worn where it won’t unlock about 5% of the time).

I have a $6 repair DIY for the door actuator ($230 for a new one). I had to fix all four on wife’s x5 so $920 vs $24 I was highly motivated.

I don't have coding software so I can't turn that crap off but I think 2020 is the year I finally get some.

Wife likes the auto lock but I could at least code that shit out when I use MY key.

(Or at least change the speed to 15-20 mph): what happens to me all the time since I work on the car is when I move the car say from street to garage: locks. From garage back to street:locks.

I have at least fifty times maybe more when to go get something from the trunk and the damned thing is locked even though I just unlocked it to put something in the car.

Scenario: go from house to car to work on it, open hatch to throw the oil in the trunk, drive around to the garage and when I get to the garage the trunk and all th doors are locked. From habit I'll just double pull door handle to exit leaving all the doors locked and go try to remove the oil from the trunk which is locked. Next step curse out the car usually quite out loud and numerous times on the way to the central lock button.

I'd have punched a dent into my car by now if that moronity was enabled

Thank you for all the help! I race an E46 so taking things apart is pretty second nature.

Cheers,
B

Heated garage can't prevent the actuator freeze. You will go places with your truck where there is precipitation and if the following happens you are nearly guaranteed to have a frozen actuator:

1) raining and just above freezing
2) temp drops slowly to below freezing and stays there.

Water gets onto the actuator by condensation so possibly it's aggravated by the car being cold and the ambient temp being warmish and humidity being high.

The quote from me was truncated to lose the very important context.

The "where" was the spot on the actuator to treat to eliminate the frozen door latch permanently.

How to fix the actuator is covered in my repair thread and videos associated with it.

Budgie, you should replace the door handle carrier before it completely breaks. Don't buy the cheap aftermarket. I bought one, and had to file it down in a number of spots to make it fit, then I gave up and returned it when the lock would not fit properly and it was to intricate and detailed to file in inaccessible spots.

Febi-Bilstein is an OEM so may be a good alternative to BMW at half the price.

Andy Wynn, where are those videos you speak of? Link please.
