Might be injectors...

Do you have INPA? It has a "smooth idle" test that shows injector selective mass adjustment - basically how much each injector is offset to create identical fuel flow per cylinder and a smooth idle. This can indicate injector issues…

A good one...

Not so good...

I need to get inpa. I've a old laptop with Windows 7 sitting there, just not got round to getting it.
Could it be the inlet manifold not being setted correctly? I remember it was off to sort out the houses below it?

Inlet manifold leaks would likely throw a code but I guess it's possible. Where is your boost gauge connected?

Maybe try unplugging MAF?

Good call, yes_its_neil - I always forget about the MAF on the diesels.

I guess that's because they don't seem to fail anywhere near as often as those on the M54/M62/N62 cars...

Hi Wayne, mine failed on my X3 a few months ago, mainly obvious with fluctuating idle but was affecting higher revs too. It actually stalled twice, both times as I was turning across the path of traffic coming towards me. Immediate improvement on unplugging the MAF, left it that way until I could get a replacement on eBay.

Regardless of root cause my suggestion is that you consider replacing vacuum hoses if you have a high mileage diesel. The first collapsed hose on mine was for the egr a couple of years back, since then all vacuum perishables have been replaced as a precaution. When the glow plugs are up for renewal, it’s a good time to change vacuum lines as the inlet manifold needs removing.

How many miles? Has the crankcase breather been replaced recently?
