Sounds more like you have problem with EWS module recognising key (transponder chip) if the other key did the same previously. With proper diagnostics you can check from EWS module what things (if any) are preventing starter activation.

How does it 'not allow' fuel injection, specifically? Will it not power on the pump?

If BST fails, does it also not power the fuel pump?

Engine ECU won't activate fuel injectors. On diesel engines it will also prevent rail pressure rise by keeping fuel volume control closed and rail pressure regulator open.

Cable from BST powers only starter motor and alternator (and engine bay jump start connector) so if BST is open engine could work normally if you just get the engine turning (for example by towing or hill start with manual gearbox) as long as battery voltage stays high enough.

If the BST is open, the starter should not crank at all, correct? So starter turning but no fuel is something else. I opened my German INPA and realigned EWS but still have no fuel, no engine run. But I think I ruled out BST thanks to the giant explanation on this thread.

Unfortunately EWS alignment function on INPA doesn't always work. DIS or ISTA more reliable in this.

Ah thanks for the tip. It did seem like it was not staying aligned.

EODguy, what do you mean 'And at the B terminal under the hood?' What about it? It's tight if that's what you're asking
its a parasitic drain, E53 are famous for them, fully charge the battery
then remove/disconnect the dvd player and cd player inside boot
the dvd player was the root cause of my drain for years,
leave the car for a few days without using it, if the car starts from
the key after sitting 3-4 days then you know one of those two are the culprit

also do check best deep cycle battery for best deep cycle batteries options.

If it is not the fuel pump for no fuel then it must be you don't have injector pulse to fire the injectors. The DME sends a grounding signal to the injectors to complete the circuit since 12 volts is always constant at the injector, not unless you don't have 12 volts constant at the injectors.

I am having same problem with ews as lo_jack. I installed new battery and tried to register battery with Foxwell (before I found out you don't have to on e53) and now the POS is dead in the water. Scan says EWS is the problem. I bought an adaptor and got the inpa software. Mine is not working. when I got to do alignment I get errors.
1) language variants do not match. malfunction possible
2) versions do not match. malfunction possible
3)ApiResulttext: error #19 IFH-0009: no response from control unit Api job error or no such result continue script processing ?

Does anyone know what I'm missing on this ? I'm about ready to shove the POS off a cliff!!!

I had an interesting problem with my 2006 X5 M54 6spMT with 142K miles...

- The 9-yr-old battery was dead, so went to Costco and brought a brand-new Interstate 94R
for $120.

- Installed the battery in Costco parking lot, brought the old battery inside for
core charge.

- Came back out, both LEFT lights (parking lights in front and rear but ONLY
LEFT side) were "on".

- Opened the door, then closed it. Then cycled the lock and unlock buttons on the Key Fob
a few times. Now the LEFT lights turned off. Thought everything
was OK.

- Got in the car, tried to crank: zip, nada, no cranking noise.

- After a few minutes, starter motor worked fine, and everything works perfectly as usual...

STRANGE!!!

- My theory is once the battery is below a preset value (is it below 10V?), then
the DME shuts off the circuit for the starter bs there is no point to crank with
let's say 10V.

- Once the new battery is installed (I verified it to be 12.50V in the store), maybe
the DME needs a few minutes to recognize the new battery voltage?

Has anyone had this problem (i.e., no crank for the first few minutes after new battery
is installed)?

Attached is the E53 starting circuit FYI...
