I eventually just got every one of them out of there. Each one seemed to require slightly different technique and tools. So it's not like if you just had that one special wrench it would all be easy. The angles and clearances are all different for each nut. Some took a minute, some took 30. All done from above. Got all my 11 mm wrenches out, ratcheting, fixed, offset, etc. Sockets, too. Frustrating when just turning 1/12 of a revolution is tough, and then you need to do that for 15 full turns to get the stud out. Character building stuff. And then you'll want to get the studs etc. carefully reinstalled or replaced. Nuts cleaned up or replaced (BTW, they are copper coated steel; threads are M7-1.0). All that to make installation a lot easier than removal, which it should be. But don't underestimate what will be needed to remove the manifolds once you have them separated from the head. Exhaust, stiffening plate, roll bar (sway bar, stabilizer) all got removed or loosened (stabilizer bar was unbolted but not removed) on my car, and even then it was not easy to do it. Good luck.

It's very very different
Close up of the end. The first swivel is at the center of the pivot axis of the ratchet meaning the first offset is zero millimeters vs the several cm offset of any other option. There is a T handle you can actually use straight out from the fastener if needed (not much torque). I cut a notch into my T handle to make it removable for better clearance. I was able to get to every difficult exahust manifold nut on two M62; one was in a 5 series wagon one was in a 7 series sedan. Full disclosure didn't do on X5. Reattaching was definitely a challenge without a lift but I used a floor jack to lift the manifold from near the cats and could position were needed. One side I put the head into the manifold before the block and used my 5:1 pully to pull the head into the alignment sleeves. There was about an inch of stress in the pipe down to the cat and I didn't want to have to deal with 18 yr old eshaust pipe fittings. It was easier to leave connected and bend the pipe. It was very interesting that the exhaust pipe made the whole head float over the block.
