Should I buy this X5 4.4?
Very cheap X5, turns over but doesn't start. The person said it died while he was driving it and it has a camshaft position sensor P0347 or P0345 error. If it's a sensor I will easily fix it. I can probably check compression and if that's the issue then I wouldn't buy it. I'm thinking the timing chain guides could've broken, which is also too big of a job. I don't think there's a way to find out if the guides broke? My X5 is 3.0 liter and I know 4.4 are a lot more complicated. I would appreciate for someone to chime in regarding possible causes of crank-no start on a 4.4l engine. Basically just trying to figure out if I can or cannot fix what's broken on that car. It has a full black interior which I could use as I want to swap by beige interior and make my X5 black on black. If I could rule out damage to the engine then I'd buy it, cuz everything else I can fix.

 With no information on the car (year mileage, condition, service history) or your ability to fix it, you are unlikely to get an answer on your original question. However, if I were in your situation, I'd buy a CPS, put it in the motor and see what happens. Cheap way to know that you are not buying a boat anchor. Seems to me if it is only a CPS then it would not be up for sale on the cheap. Just feels like there is more to it, could be a lot more.....

If you have one, plug in your OBDII scanner and pull codes for yourself, if you don’t have one, snag a “cheap” one from local auto parts store and pull codes. If CPS, I believe those can be unplugged which will let the truck default to a base map and should still start. There is one on each valve cover, right against the firewall, easy to see and reach.
My guess, there’s more going on there than he’s letting on. In regard to timing chain, check the condition of the oil and pop the oil cap and you can look directly down onto the chain and cam gear on that side, may even be able to poke in there with a finger and feel what you can feel. I’m guessing, never done it myself, but if the chain or guides were physically broken there may be some play in the chain or some minor movement of the gear. Heck, be easy with it, but you could slide a stick a flathead screw driver in there and give it a push. Could also watch the gear and chain and turn the motor over by hand using the crank bolt with a big socket and breaker bar, shouldn’t be any slack. Sent from my iPhone using Xoutpost.com

The 4.4 also has an issue with the valley pan. The engine design separates the coolant from the oil galley with a pan across the galley. Brilliant design. So there often a coolant leak from the back of the engine. A little project to replace taking the intake manifold off to get there. There is an improved design plan with a better gasket. Just another tidbit to know about on the 4.4.

Thanks for advice guys, I have both INPA and bmw scanner. But I was thinking it would be something that the errors won't show. I like the idea of reaching inside the oil cap for check for the tension.
Unfortunately the seller just told me that he has too many (8) people who want to buy it, so I'm late to the party:

Oh wow! Looks like someone may take the gamble, may be a good thing, if someone else does the leg work and it happens to still be there after 8 people look at it, it may confirm that you really didn’t want it either...

Man I must be in the wrong part of the country, I don’t find anything anywhere near me for under $6k...

This one is 4.4l, which I think is N62 as well. If it was M54 I would've actually bought it, since my X5 is M54 as well and I could have tons of spare parts

Whoops, you’re right M54 is the 6 cylinder, that is an M62, predecessor to the N62, still the V8 bit with a service history all its own. Pre-facelift was 2000 to 2003, facelift was 2004 to 2006 with the valvetronic N62 in it
