Front Drive Shaft

My mechanic told me I need a new front drive shaft and transfer case for a 2004 X5 I bought for cheap. I found this product on the internet and it made me think twice. It seems the stock drive shaft only reaches 3/4" into the female side on the transfer case. These shafts seem to advocate for deeper penetration (lol) by up to an inch. This sounds like you'd get past the stripped splines and now you'd have 1" of contact where before you had 3/4". As a fix it seems good, but it seems even better to proactively replace it.

Has anyone done this mod or bought a part like this before?

Is the drivetrain making grinding sounds? If not you can just replace the driveshaft and leave the TC alone.

Many people have either added a longer spline end to their existing prop shaft or bought the two piece kits that is designed for easy install.

About 8:1 ratio I've witnessed do not need to replace the TC (or the gear inside that mates with the prop).

(BMW refers to the front drive shaft as the front propeller shaft at least some of the time). I prefer to use the term vs. drive shaft to exclude confusion with the CV axles which are also often called drive shafts or half shafts.

"shaft", "penetration", "grinding".

If I didn't see these words on a car forum I would have thought I'm reading a steamy romance novel.

LOL

All joking aside, this is a very good mod. I would love to do it.

Has anyone done it to their E53?

I have not had this problem, even with the added horsepower. I think I’ve read enough to understand why, but, why is this happening to some?
