Maintenance Logs - Tidy or Not So Much

That's why I keep my logs. Not so much for resale value (although it certainly helps with that) but for my own personal record. With 2 kids, the wife, maintaining our house, parent's houses, and our 5 BMW fleet, I have exactly ZERO chance of accurately remembering what was done to what vehicle at what time. I can't even remember oil changes anymore, need to check the logs.

Gotta get one of those iPhone DRATS Emoji's in here.
As I make a checklist of one more last pass required repair on the E53, and tally up a laundry list of PM , yeah, I sorta/kinda/meh regret stopping the recording on the logs. |

I like keeping logs for a constant reminder of how I spend much less money than owning a "cheap" new car even though I regularly buy neglected and beaten down examples of BMWs.
Oh, and I'm also in the can't remember what happened when club. |

My logging has been getting more detailed as time goes on and I find how valuable it is to refer to old notes.
In addition to simple things like what repair/maintenance was done at a certain mileage and date, I log:
Putting all that together, sometimes it is useful and interesting when I find what the actual problem was and then trace back in time (Excel spreadsheet) to find all the previous symptoms that were related but not clear enough when they first presented. Easier now that I'm down to only 5 cars (LOL) plus a few for extended family. It does take work, but I'm sure it saves more work and lets me do a better job. I do the same thing on home maintenance tasks. I'd be pretty lost if not able to log things like this. And I know I'm the opposite of most of the world. Fine with that. The trend seems to be heading as fast as possible in the opposite direction - where manufacturers no longer publish maintenance schedules; they just program the car to turn on lights and issue warnings so the owner can dutifully drop their car and wallet off at the dealer, as dictated by the oracle.

With all of that.
I think I posted the spreadsheet for Red at some point. If not I'll do it soon. Up to ~$25000 for purchase, maintenance/repairs, and discretionary spend (personalization) for 7 years of ownership. Many of the parts I've ordered are still in boxes on the shelf but were ordered as part of future PM projects. You can't buy a nice Camry for $25000 and "enjoy" it for 7 years without putting more money into it. And insuring Red is probably a lot cheaper than a brand new Camry. So I keep buying old Bimmers just as you do oldskewel. The only real downside... is the garage time. But I am still young enough (almost 40) that the "man cave" time is a nice recouperation/reset from the stresses of other areas of life. Most of the time anyway, sometimes it's maddening frustrating.

Maintenance Logs - Tidy or Not So Much
Logs went out the window a long time ago for me. Got all my receipts though.

My next round number for age is 50. It seems like it’s been getting harder to motivate myself to go wrenching these days. I had to work myself up to get the paint done the other day. LoL... I forgot to mention, how much I like taking that E53 out for a spin though!

Yep, you understand correctly. I am almost $25k into ownership experience including purchase price. I don't include fuel or insurance in that as you would pay those on any shit box too. I have those figures as well (Red is down to about 4000 miles a year) however. ~$3600/yr is a smoking deal to drive a lux sport SUV.

I don't keep logs for the simple fact I DON'T WANT TO KNOW how much money has gone into my BMWs.
