Yep, you understand correctly. I am almost $25k into ownership experience including purchase price. I don't include fuel or insurance in that as you would pay those on any shit box too. I have those figures as well (Red is down to about 4000 miles a year) however. ~$3600/yr is a smoking deal to drive a lux sport SUV.

Your math puts me at $4600/yr. Not bad for an exotic.

I have the X5 on my business so I do keep tabs on all the costs, I keep a little excel sheet where i log the work done and the mileage.

I also keep a list of things I want checked/changed/worked on and it's getting long again...

I use fuely to log my maintenance and mileage. It's free. You can store plenty of info in it and it's always available as long as I have my phone, which I always do. The costs aren't super accurate as I don't enter exact amounts for parts, only gas. I keep all the receipts if I need to get specific info. I have been meaning to do a detailed analysis of how much I've spent on it over the years, but I never seem to get around to it. Really don't want to know.

Thought I'd throw this in. I've developed a few apps over the years and had thoughts about making a car maintenance app that didn't suck.

While researching, I found airtable.com. It's a database app that syncs with desktop app, mobile app and website. You can even embed your spreadsheet into your own website. The user interface is amazing. If you can spreadsheet, you can use this. Hell, it's probably easier than a spreadsheet.

Best part is that you can scan receipts and save as PDFs, JPGs in a "cell". So no more paperwork to save.

Anyway, I use it for the X5 and home-maintenance stuff. I can look up shit right while I'm talking to people.

It does summarize dollars spent, and that's pretty depressing ($12,762.88, including purchase price). I try to ignore that.

Anyway, worth a looksee.

Oh, it's free too.

I have every invoice for mods, repairs and maintenance since I bought my 4.6 new. They are in a file by year and by date within each year. It's not for me. It's for a potential buyer if I ever decide to sell it.

No log, but I do have every receipt for any work/part bought for our 2001 E53....
They are in mostly chronological order, in big file folder, in the glove box.

A bid CDO here, so I keep car/m'cycle receipts for all of our stable.

Same here - I just keep a folder of all the receipts for work/parts bought for each car we have. It's definitely not for resale value for sure as each of my cars are pretty much worthless by the time I'm done with them It's more served as a reminder for me on maintenance work needs.
