Door wont open from inside or ouside

So, replaced center lock button. Locked all doors and unlocked to test. Now front Pasanger door won't open from either side. I got the side panel off and airbag unbolted and got the door open. Ran both handles multiple times and door latch opens from inside or out. Didn't see anything wrong with any mechanism. Put door panel back on, and I be $$_&$##, frigging door won't open again from inside or out. Any ideas? Really scratching my head on this one.

Door wont open from inside or ouside

Secondary lock motor is defective.

The process to try to force this open:

Prepare for accidental setting off car alarm. (If you instinctively double pull the door handle at step five you will set off the alarm)

1) sit in the car where you can reach that door (helper if needed)

2) lock the car with the key remote or through open driver door if remote non functional.

3) lock the car a second time to disable interior motion sensor

4) hold down the central lock button

5) pull the inside door handle of the offending door.

6) if you don't feel the resistance of the door unlock, then unlock and relock the car with the key and try again.

7) unlock the car with the key

8) pull the door handle a second time to open the door.

Their are two lock motors one that locks/unlocks the door and one that disables the release handles we call "double lock" BMW calls something else like disengage I forget the term.

You will want to replace that door lock actuator ($230) or follow my "AWR-Fix" thread how to repair it ($12). Because it will do it again just like when the primary lock motor fails and *sometimes* won't unlock.

Sometimes getting the door open this method will get the lock working for a good while like months but once it does it, it's end of life.

That can also happen if the DHC cable is stretched and has come out of it's socket not allowing the latch to release all the way. Probably not in this case because it wouldn't have anything to do with replacing the center button.

That is true not stretched though corroded and effectively shorter so that is something to look into. If the short cable from DHC doesn't release all the way neither side will open the door

Wanted to give an update, and say thank you for the info. rebuilt my door lock and it works perfectly, even got the remote working completely! My Sqwaa was very pleased, found a door lock assembly on ebay for $65 and bought it............ Didn't realize until after the purchase that its coming from China, so still waiting on arrival to see if that fixes the front passenger door. Again, cant thank you all enough, great community!!

$65 a good deal. Good follow-up hopefully not too old so the motors aren't worn out.

Final post on the issue, I apologize for the delay. Took four weeks to get the lock and ended up not being the issue, so I have a spare lock now. Issue ended up being the cable going to the inside door handle. The outer casing had two kinks effectively shortening the cable length and not allowing the lock to release fully. New cable and all is right in the world. Thanks again to all that replied, really appreciated the assist.

It's a known failure mode. Thanks for the update, xo is the best Google food for searching for answers, so there's little doubt this thread will be found by somebody in the future with the same problem. I've seen the damaged cable 3 times at least on xoutpost that's how I knew to suggest it.

I've plenty about the short cable that runs from the DHC to the door lock/latch but I think this is the first time I've heard of this issue being related to the (much) longer cable running to the inner door handle.

Sound like the long belden cable suffered damage from repeated removal of the door card. Which isn't all that surprised - you need to juggel a number of parts when pulling these suckers apart!
