E53 X5 3.0i (First Gen) Speedometer Lag Upon Start Up?

For my E53 X5 3.0i, ever since I've had the lamp/light control module replaced, everything seems to be working just fine except for one thing.

I've noticed that only when starting up the car after the car has been off for a considerable amount of time (2-3 hours), if I put the car in drive and accelerate, the speedometer for whatever reason stays on 0 mph & does not kick in and show the speed that I am going until about 15-30 seconds after accelerating.

But, for the remainder of the time that the car is on, the speedometer then works perfectly and just as it should.

Having said this, it just strikes me as odd that this "speedometer speed lag" of 15-30 seconds only happens for the first 15-30 seconds after turning on the car when I go to accelerate, and then the speedometer will work perfectly for the remainder of the time that I am driving.

Does anyone have any insight as to what could be causing this "speedometer speed lag" that only occurs for 15-30 seconds upon the initial start up of the car?

Thanks in advance!

Three symptom as described hint at a electronic issue like leaky capacitor. I'll be interested to see if somebody had the same experience.

Do you have a good scanner you can read the internal speed real-time to verify the DME knows the correct speed and the speedo just it's reporting wrong not that weird speed is also internal? I would definitely want to know.

You should get an abs/DSC error if the internal speed is wrong so I don't think so I would just confirm.

Thank you for the insight. It is much appreciated. I do not have a scanner that can read the internal speed in real-time to verify if the DME knows the correct speed.

However, I do agree that it does seem like it's an electronic issue. I am also interested to see if anyone else has ever experienced this issue.

I will definitely keep you posted.

If you have a high spec. cluser and/or an MID unit in the dash, you can pull up the actual speed the ABS and DME are reading/using. The speedo dial "speed" is derived from this value, with an offset.

If the digital display is correct and the issue only with the speedo dial iteslef, it could be a capacitor fault orstepper motor issue in the cluster.

Use the OBC hidden menu im pretty sure one opt9on is the vehicle speed. (the actual speed). It will be 3mph less than the speedo and you set before starting learn how to do it and find which test will show speed.

Sounds good guys. Thank you. I will take a look at the OBC hidden menu functions and look for the speed option to try to assess what's going on.
