Transmission issue on 2004 m54b30 e53
I bought this for the interior, but if I'm able to get it going I can sell it. |

"going into gear" strongly implies fwd or rev.
Do you get indicator on dash and console of requested gear? Also if so you should be able to confirm with scanner the "L" pins

Could be broken Tcase splines...but yeah. Need more pertinent information.

04 should be x-drive. If you get driveline noise no motion it can be an axle popped out of the dif. That comes up twice a year on xoutpost.
If rear comes out park will not work and car will roll. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Pro

Guy I bought it from says he was driving it home from work and the trans failsafe message came on. He just coasted to the side of the road. He said there was nothing to indicate there was any issue with the transmission. No clunking into gears, hard shifting or missed gears. No weird noises or burnt trans fluid smells. Odd thing is there was no trans failsafe mode lit when I picked it up. On my other one I got back in September it had trans failsafe mode lit up and I was limited to 4th gear only. That one was an easy fix though. Anyway, I'm going to diagnose more with insta later as well as check fluid level. It's all dry underneath though. Not even any motor oil leaks. Weird..... that there are no leaks. Lol |

Broken t case splines would be noisy when trying to engage the transmission wouldn't it? There's no noise at all when moving the selector lever into drive or reverse. |

Nope. It goes into park and doesn't budge.

Rest codes (even if not present) and reset adaptations while in neutral then try putting it into gear and driving (keep Foxwell NT-510 hooked up) then watch live data and see if your dash and actual transmission gearbox show the same settings, if not repeat but shut off when done and put into park and let it go to sleep. Upon restart check live data as before and if it works all good but if it is working even with gear position errors it is your mechatronics unit in the transmission.
The above steps are for when you aren't getting anything after trying reset in PARK..... PS. It won't hurt anything to reset your TC oil wear while you're at it just to see, but don't forget to change your TC oil later. Sent from my SM-A730F using Tapatalk

Have you tried jacking up the vehicle on all 4's and inspecting the driveline n such and spinning the wheels by hand?
