At higher RPM there is sufficient gas pressure to spool up the turbo - at lower RPM, there isn't (due to the escaping gases). This is pretty normal with the cracked exhaust manifold you have. You might be over-thinking this.

If you've already identified leaking manifold, fix that before worrying about if there's another problem also.
Isn't there a way to read the current turbo output pressure, I'm pretty sure I saw this with each of my scan solutions.

INPA can display the inlet manifold pressure, which (boost leaks aside) is the boost pressure. Max boost on this engine is around 2 bar, from memory.

Not done these test but for sure manifold leaks....and turbo does for sure kick in especially under load going up an incline but I have to floor it over 2000rpm...waiting for the cast iron manifold and will take it from there

Hello again right been a long wait cast manifold arrived from Uk, and will pick up soon, due to easter coming up x5 going 'in' on 28th april....mechanic told me it can take up to 2 days and went on about the bolts not coming out etc....and needing to get a specialist to take action to remove, at the end of the day i will tell him just take the nuts off please and if they come off just replace with new nuts that come with manifold, if the existing nuts are too jammed or shear the bolt then well yes not much choice then long way round....also told him about the turbo boost being low and not kicking in until over 2000 revs and under load and he said it maybe the hose, but hey heard it from most gurus here that my symptoms of visible smoke in the engine bay from cold and in the that area is a cracked manifold....and cant be totally unrelated to the lack of boost at low revs due to not enough pressure from gases to spin turbo....ok wish me luck....thanks
