What does RealOEM say when you enter your VIN and look at the exhaust section?

When I select the DPF parts, it says "No parts found matching your car." So no DPF was factory fitted and the retro-fitted DPF is not fitted either.

https://www.realoem.com/bmw/enUS/sho...diagId=18_0648

I think the factory-fitted DPF is monitored. The retro-fitted DPF is not.

If you have vacuum actuated turbo (instead of electric servo actuation) and no throttle valve before EGR it's EU3 variant without DPF. Also injector part numbers are different on these EU3/EU4 versions.

With the electric VGT operation, a throttle valve, DPF with monitoring, swirl flaps etc. I guess the EU4 3.0d e53 is a very different beast!

Electric EGR operation too? Not sure I've seen that on the e53 - only the later e70 and some earlier sedans using the M57TU/TU2.

Well actually not that much different.

The very same vacuum operated EGR valve. (Of course the housing is a bit different because the throttle valve is connected to EGR valve.) AFAIK E70 3.5d (US variant) is the only M57 engine with electric EGR valve. The EGR system on this is much more complex with separate low and high pressure EGR.

yup LX10326 and search shows this...so not sure if fitted still

Searching for this Catalyser/Diesel particulate filter gave me this in long list:
18_0716: Retrofit diesl particle fltr unregulated
18100422102: Installation kit, open system, DPF

Retrofit particle filter E53-M57 EU3 1 18100418189 EBA 0035951, EBA 0428574
only in conjunction with
-- Installation kit, open system, DPF E53 - M57 EURO3 1 18100422102

The retro-fitted kit is listed for all cars - doesn't mean it was fitted though.

Easiest way to check ? Have a look underneath!

Actually not so easy because the retrofit DPF looks pretty much the same as original cat.

OK - I'm just going to shut up now.

But FWIW, the give-away of the retro-fitted DPF is the two exhaust pipes directly aft of the DPF (about 300mm or so) would be joined by welding - the factory cat has no welds, only straight pipes directly to the slip-joints feeding the muffler inlets.

DPF...

Cat...
