Purchased a used one from eBay with what appear to be good bushings

Swapped the shifter out which is not nice and tight and the same issue occurs. From P to R it lights up R for a second then light goes out and the trans is in Neutral. Same if I drop from R to N. D Sticks fine. If you go from D to R or to N it sticks. Same issue with the selector switch from the original and replacement trans. Im not sure what else this can be.

If you move at the transmission what then? I realize it's dicey I'd maybe want to go with 4 wheels off the ground. Would need a helper to press the park interlock or just do with the cable detached.

I can try that but I feel we did already try this with no luck. Last suspect is the used trans cable brackets were bent/mangled pretty bad which I did not notice when I purchased it and our assumption is this trans was potentially dropped during its removal from its original X5 and maybe the rod inside that runs from side to side it slightly bent due to this? This issue is super odd and the cable adjustment is axpretty simple procedure...

My thought is to remove cable from the equation perhaps even disconnect. Then i think the positions internally have detents, see if they are snapping and if they read correctly.

After that, some "dark pink" neck creativity to add or subtract to the adjustment of the cable.

I agree why but why does it register correctly from D to R? I now have to go from P to N to R to go in reverse ughhhh....

I've had this happen on a customer 328. In his case i couldn't go from P to R reliable. I had to go to N and back to R. Felt like a bent cable bracket.

Exactly my issue. N does the same thing. What did you do to adjust?

It had only started to do the issue. Was still intermittent. Customer crashed the car before it got consistent. His was 2008 and i6. Not sure which xm.
