I'll see if i can find the video i took testing the motors before i reinstalled the DLA.

The key blade will disable the alarm by default. It's possible to code it either way so I'd do a test where the alarm won't wake up the neighbors just in case.

It is highly recommended to get an oil that is certified for your engine. Calls for LL01? An LL01 certified oil is recommended.

That being said, many of these specs overlap and are just fine to substitute for LL01 if you are interested, especially if you are conservative in your drain intervals. MB 229.5, Porsche A40, and VW 504/505 are pretty close to LL01.

I've used LL01 oils in MB's and 229.5 oils in BMWs (at my own risk of course).

https://www.lubrizol.com/company/too...formance-tools is a nice place to start to learn more. Click on the Passenger Car link and then the cert/s you are interested in to see how they compare to each other.

Much much appreciated it's ok will stop making mountain out of molehill, X5 is getting on a bit 21 years old in nov....but still doesn't mean I want to chuck the wrong oil in her...so thought i'd check...what I have done is approach the manufacturer of one oil that couple of years ago the 5w 40 was BMW LL01 approved , but last 2 years is not...see what the truth is.....

Super helpful link...

to just follow up on my original comment about LL-12, it looks like LL-12 FE is almost exactly the same as LL-04 which might be why the dealer substituted it in my car before I owned it.

It's perfectly fine to be concerned about putting the right oil in your car, whether new or 21 years old.

Another thing about manufacturers certs is oil makers pay to be assessed and officially certified. Sometimes they just dont feel like paying anymore. Sometimes the formulation has changed and they have not yet or dont feel like paying to be certified.

Which oil is this? It would be interesting to hear from the manufacturer why it isnt anymore.

Hey Wpoll you right what I failed to mention is that oil made by AVISTA 5w 40 BUT sold and repackaged and sold under a different label by one of the biggest european supermarkets chains this year doesn't meet LL01 whereas a year ago it did... so I have chased AVISTA the lube maker as doubt the supermarket will have any say in matter

Being repackaged does complicate things. Are you even sure it's Avista still?

Does it still carry any certs?
