Automatic Gear Box advice needed plz!
I have a 2004 X5 Diesel Automatic that has done about 200k miles. The other day i was driving and then the car went into limp mode. After i stopped, the car cooled down and it started as normal again. When i got home i connected my diagnostic computer to the car and I got this error - Fault Code 005088 EGS Sensor Transmission Switch L1 - L4 DTC = P0705 (Transmission Range Sensor A Circuit (PRNDL - INPUT) So I have few questions for anyone that can help me please? 1) Do I need a new range switch or can i clean my existiing one? 2) I know that i need to change the gear box oil and filter, would it make sense to change the solenoids at the same time or, can i test and clean them using an ultrasonic tank etc? Any help and advice is greatlly appreciated. Thank you. PS... My gear box is a GA6HP262 unit |

A good scanner will show you the L1-4 lines real-time so you can tell if the readings are getting from transmission to the egs.
When my 3.0i acted like your symptoms was just dirty water in the connector to the transmission. When you shift does the gear position reliably update on the dashboard? Mine would show nothing some times and other times show impossible gears like 54. My understanding is the XM is different on the diesel but I'm hoping for your case that the selection switch is external like the v8 and you could take apart and clean the contacts which is what i was about to do on mine when i found the dirty plug. ![]() ![]() –awr– Using Tapatalk VIP on iPhone

So, when i change gears from P to D the the numbers on the dash board all correspond correctly. If i then use the gear box like a manual and move from 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6 everything works correctly and the numbers are fine. I will look under the car to make sure that the connector is okay and there is no corrosion there. Thank you |

Check the connector at the TCM/EGS in the ebox also. And the wire loom that goes down the firewall.

EGS aka TCM is in the e-box at the firewall. It's under the cover at the leading edge of the windshield

Once the tranmission Oil pan has been removed. Would it make sense to replace the solenoids? My car was made in 2024 and has done over 200K miles.
Is there a way of cleaning the solenoids, like car injectors? Thank you |

You could test each of the four Hall sensors. Failure of one or more of these is a common cause of the P0705 issue with the 6HP26/28.
