OBC= On Board Computer, the multi-function control panel that is part of the BMW stereo head unit (mileage, range, speed limit alarm, engine lock code, etc). This is separate from the readout that is just below your odometer. Going with a double-DIN stereo will mean getting rid of the OBC controls, while the readout by the guages will remain intact. The BMW Nav unit incorporates the OBC controls on-screen, while after-market units do not. However, as mentioned above, the Pioneer Nav units generally have some Dynamics Guages, etc that show various aspects of how the car is handling/driving. However, there is no active control of the car's functions... For me, the only one of great significance is the starter Lock Code, since I do use it when parking in areas I where it might come in handy :-) Hope this helps. M |

i've got a question about the oem navigation retrofit....is there a way to install a dvd-rom up front or underneath the console bin? it seems stupid to have a dvd-rom back in the trunk unless they have multi-disc dvd-roms

Yupe, your X5 and any other one with or w/o nav are double din, (one the cd and one the OBC) so if you remove one like the cd then you need a single din, but if you remove the cd and the OBC then you have a double din empty space to put either oem nav or the pioneer. |

i know an aftermarket navi/dvd would be cheaper/easier, i know the quality/features on an aftermarket would exceed oem but in spite of all that i decided to keep the plan and go through the stress of retrofitting the oem navigation...wish me luck!!
ok..so i want to be able to play dvd movies, which dvd-roms are recommended?..are there any bmw branded versions?
