At times the Nav question feels like a coin-toss, so be grateful you've arrived at a decision! For DVD movies, I think the BMW systems are built into the back primarily (Either DropDown Console or Rear Entertainment Package in seat headrests) Each of these can tie into a specific OEM DVD player for that installation. However, this will not put video to the front screen unless you do some rewiring/ workarounds. Don't think it's that tough though. I'm quite sure I've seen a feature on adding video playback in the X5 Articles. With pics! Good luck & keep us posted through the process! |

ive got a question for the x3 owners!
those of you that have a nav how does it operate? is it the flip up kind on the dash then my next thought is cant we do that same type to our x5s... that way u can keep the obc and have a flip up nav like the ones in x3s i may be totally wrong here but its a thought. or u can keep ure oem equip and install a aftermarket nav as a flip up one and that way u can keep the obc also....any comments on this? |

with these types maybe one can even remove the screen and place the screen like the x3 nave have it and remove the cd player in the x5 and use the navs player unit...... does anyone know how much room there is above the airvents in the x5 dash? |

Nice drawing, Artman. It actually looks pretty good. As a retrofit, it would be a huge task, plus opening a large hole in the dash could weaken it's structural integrity, not to mention the large number of components inside the dash that would have to be moved.
An aftermarket Nav system would be more than adequate. I'm not to keen on the Pioneer AVIN models - it blocks too many controls with the screen is extended, plus it's not portable. I like the current Garmins (Street Pilot 2730 or Nuvi 350). Their feature set have me thinking these are must have gadgets. Regards, Mike |

1) Precious little space above air vents. Not sure of exact measurements, but it's clearly a tight fit. 2) You'd end up with duplicate inputs/outputs. Remember, there would be so much duplication with having 2 stereos & 2 diagnostic systems that you'd essentially have to gut one system of its wires to feed the other, right? 3) Not sure everyone would go for the styling, and it would certainly be permanent for resale, etc. Just my .02 on all these, tho. Where there's a will.... |

true, i forgot to measure the space when i had my dash all opened up, i spilled coffee so i removed the center console and most of the dash area to clean it up. i think its cleaner than new now lol. anyway, well havin g to units i dont think will be that huge of a problem becuase i remember readin on here about a new decive that could detect a primary signal and a secondary signal something to do with a backup cam and dvd video so if the dvd was on and you put the car into reverse it would overide the dvdsignal and display the back up cam so i think u can easly use a similar system for this also u can i think use y-forck type and split it up so that 2 inputs lead to 1 exit so which ever one is outputing is the main line etc. .... and i highly doubt if u cut the foam dash that it will cause structure failur.....the and plust its noit like you are splitting it in half you arre sipmply putting a square while and it still is intake but all this is merely an idea and the only big thing holding me back is i dont know how big the x3 unit is not the monitor cuz the monitor will fit in the x5 in my picture it will work but the rest of that nav i dont know how big it is ooooo i wonder if you had long enought cables you could mount the unit inside the glove box and just hve and monitor mounted on the dash foldable manor...i need to get my hands on a dash and measurments.....sry for the grammer... |

DO NOT, i repeat DO NOT get any aftermarket screens for your X5's, I have the AVIC-D1 and believe me there is no bezel that will make it look stock, NOTHING, not even the one off mybimmer.net. In fact, when I get the retro nav 16:9 parts together, im going to ebay off the AVIC-D1 unit. Amazing unit, dont get me wrong, but it makes the X5 interior look trashy. My opinion, save for the Retrofit or stick with what you have, aftermarkets don't cut it in BMW's.
Anyways, Ive got a few questions, Im trying to break down two deals into one from Rover, a 16:9 for my X5 with the whole nav kit, and the same for my M3. The question is, on a 2001 X5 and a 2003 M3, what will work on these kits, what wont. Another thing, I was talking to a gentleman at my Local BMW dealer and he told me if your X5 2001 did not come with the 4:3 nav system, there is no way they can put in a 16:9 system, its simply not wired for it. Is this true, or will Rovers kits have the parts to make it work? Lastly, How hard is the retrofit installation? I'm not a handyman, but I do have a tonne of spare time in my hands since University is off for another 2 months. Are the installation instructions it comes with enough to retrofit without problems? Thanks, the kits rover supplies are: X5: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/BMW-G...5474QQtcZphoto and M3: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/BMW-G...6642QQtcZphoto |
