I undid everything I could see/find but it still would not open. There are 2 holes that look like they have rivits or blind screws through to the circuit board carrier inside. I don't want to force anything as it would negate my reasons for buying it.

I tried several times but was never able to get the instrument cluster open. I tried pretty much everything to wedge the x screws in the "open" position but nothing worked and it wouldnt open. It felt like it was glued together, because even when I would have the clips for one section open, it wouldnt budge. I finally gave up on it.

did you check the how to guide on the main page.
http://xoutpost.com/articles/x5/inter...t-cluster.html it has a picture in which the 5 X's are circled. once you twist all 5, you can split the cluster open. the first thing i did before i started was to slip a flat head screwdriver into the top two latches, so that they stayed open at all times. one of the things that i learned is that the x's are hard to twist and might even break when you try too hard. also, whne you have one open, and are trying to get another one open, the first x will lock again. so becareful of this. someone had pointed out earlier that as you get each X open, try to split the case near that x, so that it will get wedged into that open position. it took me a long time to do it. i had to put it down for an hour because i was getting frustrated with it, and when i came back, it took ~10 minutes. so take a break, read the paper and then come back to it, but patience is the key with this DIY |

The key is when you get one x started to pry apart the case so that it stays in the unlock poisiton. Then move on to the next one all the way around. There shouldn't be anything hodling it together other that the x's and the tabs. It will be a tight fit to prevent dust from getting in. After I turned an x, I had to use a flat screwdriver and pry the pieces apart a little.

I just opened it. Turns out that there were glue points around the outside that I had to force. But I got it opened and closed again.

Small points all around the outside edge. You just need to apply a little force to the whole unit to pop them.
